Behind a gate dating from 1800 stands the Church of St Peter and Paul in Zagórów. Its late Baroque remodelling, artworks from earlier centuries and the market on Duży Rynek offer different ways to explore the town: architecture and sacred art on the one hand, a recurring market day on the other.

Church of St Peter and Paul: Building History and Interior

Between 1740 and 1760, the church was remodelled in the late Baroque style through the patronage of the Abbot of Ląd, Antoni Mikołaj Łukomski. This period places the building work in the mid-18th century; the gate dating from 1800 provides a later point of reference. Together, the patron, style and two dates provide a concrete framework for understanding the history without reducing the remodelling to a single year.

The interior has a single nave and a rectangular choir. Two chapels, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Cross, are located in the arms of the transept.

Artworks and Furnishings

The main altar contains an image of the Virgin Mary and Child, dating from the mid-17th century, in a Rococo frame. Sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul from the 16th century stand beside the main altar. The vault is decorated with polychromy—a multicoloured painted design—by Aleksander Przewalski. Przewalski was a painter and sculptor, as well as a student of Jan Matejko. The furnishings also include late Baroque side altars, a Rococo baptismal font and a pulpit decorated with the Pobóg and Ślepowron coats of arms.

One chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the main altarpiece also depicts the Virgin Mary and Child. This motif thus appears both in the dedication of a part of the church and in the altarpiece. The dates also allow for a further distinction: the sculptures date from the 16th century, the image from the mid-17th century, and the remodelling from the mid-18th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the dated artworks chronologically from the late Baroque building phase.

Market and Regional Orientation

A market is held on Duży Rynek every Wednesday and Saturday. If you choose the market as a reason for your trip, plan around one of these days of the week and check the date locally before setting off. This calls for a different kind of planning than a visit to the church: for the market, the right day of the week matters; for a visit focused on the church, the architecture, artworks and their historical context take centre stage.

Zagórów lies near the Warta River in Słupca County, in the Greater Poland Voivodeship. The road section between Zagórów and Ląd is scenic. These details provide different kinds of geographic orientation: the river’s proximity refers to the town, while the scenic description concerns a particular stretch of road between Zagórów and Ląd. This scenic aspect complements cultural and time-specific interests.
