Wojnowice’s history spans early traces of settlement through to transport and architectural history. For travellers interested in culture, the village offers more than a single historical connection: its estate history, church, former manor house and village playground, opened in 2024, each add a different dimension.

Historical Layers in Wojnowice

Archaeological work in Wojnowice revealed early traces of settlement dating to the Neolithic period. The village was first mentioned in a written record in 1352, when Sandivogius (Sędziwój) de Woynowicze appears. These details offer different historical perspectives: the traces of settlement reach far back in time, while the written record names a specific person. This distinction makes it possible to separate early settlement from the village’s documented history.

From the 18th century until 1939, Wojnowice belonged to the Mielżyński family, who also owned Dakowy Mokre. Kazimierz Raczyński provides a personal connection to Wojnowice: he was born here in 1739. Thus, two different points of reference sit side by side—a long history of ownership and a biographical connection to an individual.

From 10 June 1919, the 1st Wielkopolska Squadron was stationed on the estate grounds for several months; it included seven reconnaissance aircraft. This episode adds a chapter of military aviation to the estate’s history. The date, duration and unit provide a specific timeframe for this historical connection.

Manor House, Park and Church

A former manor house dating from the mid-19th century still stands on Łagiewska Street, across the river in the direction of Łagiew. Its masonry-and-timber-frame construction, hipped roof and dormer describe not only when it was built but also its form. This makes its construction as concrete a point of reference as its age.

The large trees near the former manor house are remnants of a park that once stood there. The historical connection therefore extends beyond the building into the landscape. The Church of Saint Brother Albert Chmielowski marks a much later period of construction: it was built between 1986 and 1990. The time separating the manor house from the church shows that Wojnowice’s architecture spans different eras.

The Parish of Saint Brother Albert Chmielowski is located at Kanałowa 20, 64-330 Opalenica, in Wojnowice. If you plan to get in touch or visit, check the current contact details and service times in advance.

Transport History and Leisure

The transport routes also show two distinct periods. Voivodeship Road No. 307 between Poznań and Nowy Tomyśl runs through Wojnowice. Before the Second World War, a narrow-gauge railway about eight kilometres long began here; it ran via Szewce and Uścięcice to Dakowy Mokre. The comparison is between a road that passes through the village and a historic rail link with named stops along the way.

A more recent leisure attraction is the village playground, which opened in September 2024. Its facilities include swings, sandpits, a locomotive with a slide and tunnel, table football and a zip line. This adds a different dimension to the village’s history than its older architectural and transport connections. Check the condition of the playground locally before your visit.
