Międzychód can be explored through a variety of points of reference: its location between lake and river, routes through the town and specific historical landmarks. One unusual stop is the “Laufpompa,” an artesian spring housed in a decorative cast-iron pump. It rises from a depth of about 90 meters and has a distinctive smell. It is believed to have healing properties.

Water and navigation in Międzychód

The town lies on an isthmus between a lake and a river. Narrow lanes called “gaskami” lead from the market square to the lake or to the Warta. The square thus provides a reference point for two different directions. The promenade, by contrast, runs around Jezioro Miejskie. It helps visitors find their way around the lake; another tourist route starts at the bridge in Międzychód and follows the northern bank of the Warta to Skwierzyna. This makes it possible to distinguish the town’s lake and river connections without combining them into a single route.

Routes through the town and surrounding area

The tourist route “Szlakiem sławnych międzychodzian,” meaning roughly “In the footsteps of famous residents of Międzychód,” passes through the town. Another option leads through the nearby “Kolno Międzychodzkie” forest reserve: a red hiking trail runs from Międzychód to Kamionna through the reserve. One route is described as a path through the town, the other as a route through a reserve in its surroundings. This is a useful distinction when choosing whether to focus on the town itself or a route through the forest.

Town history at specific sites

The Laufpompa combines a striking form with an unusual origin deep underground. As an artesian spring, it is enclosed in a cast-iron pump; its approximate depth and distinctive smell are as much a part of its description as its reputed healing properties. It is a special point of interest for anyone drawn to the distinctive details of a place.

Historical evidence can also be found at the Kościół pw. Niepokalanego Serca Najśw. Marii Panny church. The surrounding wall contains tombstones of townspeople from the 17th and 18th centuries. The entrance hall also holds the tombstone of Krzysztof Unruh, who owned the town in the 17th century. The layout of the old town is also noteworthy. Taken together, these traces offer a glimpse of both the history of individual townspeople and the town’s older structure.

The regional museum is located at ul. 17 Stycznia 100. In Tietza Park by the lake, there is a wooden sculpture and a stone bearing a portrait based on a surviving photograph. The museum, church and park each have a different focus: the museum’s location, the tombstones, and the portrait in the park, respectively. The park thus connects a named lakeside location with a specific form of commemoration.

The Kolno Międzychodzkie forest reserve

The “Kolno Międzychodzkie” forest reserve lies a short distance east of Międzychód and is part of Międzychód municipality. Established in 1959, it covers 14.77 hectares. Situated between Lakes Koleńskie and Kludno, it offers a distinct landscape setting alongside the routes through the town. The red hiking trail from Międzychód to Kamionna passes through the reserve. Its location, area and trail provide a specific context for distinguishing between a visit to the town and an excursion into the surrounding area.
