Kościan combines outdoor recreation with two different perspectives on history: the permanent exhibition “Królewskie miasto Kościan” features a diorama of the royal town from the early 17th century, while the privately owned Koźlak windmill now houses a gallery. The 15-hectare Miejski im. Kajetana Morawskiego Park is another attraction, offering space for family recreation and several forms of physical activity. These three places each have a different focus: time in the park, a historical townscape, or the history of a single building.

Recreation in Miejski Park

Miejski im. Kajetana Morawskiego Park covers 15 hectares, or 150,000 square metres. It is suitable for family recreation, as well as running, cycling, walking and Nordic walking. Those looking to spend time outdoors alongside exploring cultural history will find a distinct focus here. Activities in the park are clearly different from exploring the historical townscape or the history of a building: the emphasis is on exercise and recreation. This active side offers another way to get to know Kościan.

Kościan in a diorama

The permanent exhibition “Królewskie miasto Kościan” features a diorama of the royal town and its surroundings from the early 17th century. It depicts 40 historically documented buildings at a scale of 1:380. One centimetre in the model represents 3.8 metres in real life. The diorama shows the town of Kościan surrounded by walls, as well as the starost’s castle. The scale makes the reduction tangible and helps visitors view individual buildings and the overall scene together.

The diorama thus offers two perspectives: it depicts individual documented buildings while also presenting the royal town and its surroundings as a unified historical townscape. Those interested in urban history can switch between the detail of a particular building and the wider view. The time frame remains the early 17th century, so the exhibition focuses on a specific period in Kościan’s history.

The history of the Koźlak windmill

The privately owned Koźlak windmill is located at Krimpen Square, near Kościan’s northern bypass. It was built in 1714, renovated in the 19th century and moved from Czarkowo to Kościan in 1977. These dates mark different stages: its construction, a later renovation and, finally, its relocation. This timeline helps place the history of the individual building in context without confusing its construction date with its move. Today, the windmill houses a gallery.

The main difference in scale between the two cultural attractions is that the diorama presents the royal town as a whole, with its many buildings, while the windmill draws attention to the history of a single building. This distinction can help you choose what to focus on: would you like to view Kościan as a historical townscape or explore the windmill’s construction and local history? The park offers a separate focus on outdoor recreation and exercise.
