Skulsk combines sacred art, nature trails of distinctly different lengths and amenities at Lake Skulska Wieś. These three themes involve different planning decisions: the pilgrimage church features a work that can be dated, the trails are defined by their distance, stops and routes, while the leisure centres offer beaches and water sports equipment rentals. If you’re looking for hotels in Skulsk, you can plan your stay around your interests rather than treating these different destinations as one combined itinerary.

Sacred Art and Imagery

The pilgrimage church, Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Bolesnej, houses a Gothic Pietà dating from 1420. It depicts Mary with the dead Christ, who has been taken from her knees. The date places the work in the 15th century. The church interior is also furnished with altars, frescoes and an ornate pulpit featuring a figure of the Archangel Michael. This means that a single dated artwork and the other features of the church interior offer distinct points of interest.

The local history of religious image-making also provides its own historical context: in the first half of the 19th century, Skulsk was widely known as a centre for this craft. While the Pietà dates to the 15th century, the well-known image production belongs to a later period. Together, these two dates offer a broader insight into the town’s art-historical connections.

Choose Nature Trails by Length and Route

The “Brzegiem jeziora” nature trail is 0.5 kilometres long and has six stops. It runs from Skulsk to Mniszki A along Lake Skulska Wieś. Its short distance sets it apart from the two longer nature trails, while its route along the lakeshore makes it a distinct option when planning a walk.

The 13-kilometre “Poznaj Ptasie Tajemnice” nature trail has eight stops. Its route runs from Skulsk via Mniszki and Łuszczewo and back to Skulsk. At 17 kilometres, “Mare Polonorum” is four kilometres longer and has seven stops. The route runs from Mielnica Duża via Skulsk, Pilich and Galiszewo to Łuszczewo.

Compared directly, “Mare Polonorum” covers a greater distance, while “Poznaj Ptasie Tajemnice” has one more stop and returns to Skulsk. The routes also differ: one ends in Łuszczewo, while the other connects Skulsk with a return route via Mniszki and Łuszczewo. If you want Skulsk to be both your starting and ending point, this difference is worth considering when choosing a trail. Trail conditions can change, so check their current state before setting out on a specific walk.

The Lake and Waterways in the Municipality

Skulsk’s leisure centres on Lake Skulska Wieś have beaches and water sports equipment rentals. The lakeside activities therefore differ from the nature trails: the focus here is on beaches and equipment available to rent, rather than a particular trail distance. If equipment rental is important to your plans, check its current availability and operating arrangements before your visit.

There are further connections to the water at the municipal level. The part of Gmina Skulsk that borders Lake Gopło is within the Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia nature reserve. If you’re planning activities there, check the current boundaries and rules of the protected area beforehand. In addition, the Warta–Gopło Canal in Gmina Skulsk is a heavily used section of Wielka Pętla Wielkopolski, a 690-kilometre waterway. The municipality thus encompasses both a protected lakeshore area and a section of an extensive water route.
