Grätz (Grodzisk Wielkopolski) preserves traces of two former town layouts: the medieval founding town around the square Old Market, the Stary Rynek, and the so-called New Town with its rectangular market square, pl. Powstańców Wielkopolskich. The two districts are connected by ulica Szeroka. The different shapes of the squares provide two clearly recognisable points of reference in the historic townscape.

Finding your way around the Stary Rynek

The Stary Rynek is the centre of the oldest district. A three-storey town hall dating from the 19th century stands in the square. The connection between the two districts via ulica Szeroka adds a clear street axis to the townscape: the squares differ in shape, while the street connects the two districts.

Monastery complex and church architecture

The former Bernardine monastery complex in Grodzisk Wielkopolski is considered a monument of particular regional value. Its church, which remains unchanged, preserves its Baroque furnishings and decoration. The complex was built in 1662 by Jan Leopold Opaliński, the Castellan of Nakło; the monastery church was consecrated in 1739. The two dates mark different stages in its history: the construction of the complex and the consecration of the church.

Another distinctive architectural form can be seen in the parish church of St Jadwiga of Silesia. It has a single nave and double chapels on both sides. These and the presbytery are covered by circular domes. Grätz thus brings different architectural themes together: Baroque furnishings in the monastery church and the distinctive spatial design of the parish church.

Mill, brewing tradition and legend

A post mill dating from 1766 was reconstructed in Grodzisk Wielkopolski in 2011. It recalls the town’s long-standing milling tradition and is considered a tourist attraction for travellers passing through and other tourists. The brewing tradition is also part of the town’s history: it received its first privilege for brewers and maltsters in 1601.

The well of Father Bernard of Wąbrzeźno is considered a symbol of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. A legend passed down for centuries tells of the miraculous revival of the town’s spring. Here, a well-known town symbol is linked with a local storytelling tradition.

Routes through the municipality

The Grodziska-Pętla route passes through all the localities of the municipality of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. The landscape varies greatly along the route, which offers a comprehensive impression of the municipality’s historic character as well as its natural environment and scenery.

The other routes described differ considerably in terrain and technical difficulty. The Szlak Piaskowych Wydm is technically difficult and very difficult in places. It follows forest tracks with numerous climbs, steep ascents and descents, and sandy sections, and is intended for experienced cyclists using mountain or cross bikes. By contrast, the Szlak Pielgrzyma runs through open terrain, is technically easy (2/5), and has no climbs.
