The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trzemeszno is a late Baroque church with preserved Romanesque and Gothic elements. Memorial sites and themed routes draw attention to uprisings, independence and the local shoemaking tradition. You can focus on architecture, political remembrance or the connection between the two themes.

Architecture from several periods

Romanesque columns dating from the 12th century have been preserved in the western part of the basilica. A stone tomb slab, which was once set into the floor, is a separate feature: visitors can see it in an exhibition in the area beneath the gallery. Check whether the exhibition is open before your visit. This helps distinguish two different historical traces of the basilica: the columns as preserved architectural elements and the tomb slab as an exhibited object.

The Alumnat is also a late Baroque building. Abbot Michał Kosmowski founded it as the Collegium Tremesnensis. This offers an opportunity to compare two late Baroque buildings, focusing on different details: in the basilica, these include the Romanesque and Gothic elements alongside its late Baroque character; in the Alumnat, the founder and the name Collegium shape its historical significance. Those interested in architectural history can thus find more than a single stylistic label, without treating the two buildings as the same.

Remembering uprisings and the town’s history

The Mauzoleum Powstańców Wielkopolskich commemorates participants in the victorious Greater Poland Uprising of 1918–1919. They included residents of Trzemeszno and the surrounding area who fought for Greater Poland to return to Poland, which had been re-established after the partitions. A cross at Plac Powstańców also commemorates town residents who took part in uprisings. The memorial sites emphasize different aspects: the mausoleum identifies the specific uprising, while the cross commemorates residents’ participation in uprisings in general.

The Izba Pamięci Jana Kilińskiego offers a different perspective. It preserves the memory of Jan Kiliński, who was born in Trzemeszno, and of the shoemaking tradition once widespread in the town. It thus brings together a figure from the town’s history and a local craft that was once widespread. This complements the political remembrance with a look at local origins and working life.

Two themed routes

The tourist route “Trzemeszno, miasto siedmiu placów” focuses on the town’s significance for Polish independence, its multicultural history during the partitions, and its connections to important figures in Polish and Greater Poland history. It offers a broader historical perspective than a single memorial site: independence, cultural history and notable figures are its shared themes.

The “Dotknij Trzemeszno” route is marked by signs at twelve different points in Trzemeszno and its surroundings. The signs feature a distinctive logo and a QR code. The routes thus differ in their stated focus: “Trzemeszno, miasto siedmiu placów” foregrounds historical themes, while “Dotknij Trzemeszno” focuses on the twelve marked points in the town and its surroundings. Depending on whether you are more interested in thematic approaches to history or the route’s scattered points, you can take this difference into account when planning your visit.
