Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral and the waterfalls show two very different sides of Calbayog City: layered architectural history on one hand, rock and water on the other. There are also museums, coastal landscapes and islands. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding which of these themes interests you most.

Cathedral and Collections

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in the 19th century and is the central church of the Diocese of Calbayog. It is considered the largest church on Samar. After alterations and renovations over the years, its architecture combines elements from different periods. The old dome, tower spire and thick walls remain from the originally Spanish-built church. These architectural features give the cathedral a layered character: they connect the history of the original building with its later changes.

The museums offer distinct focuses. The Samar Archaeological Museum displays pottery, bones and religious objects from Samar’s caves and rivers. The Handumanan Museo de Calbayog focuses on the history, culture and art of the Calbayognons. Its exhibits include keepsakes, family heirlooms and paintings, as well as local music and film productions. The collections thus offer different perspectives: one museum focuses on finds from Samar, while the other highlights the cultural life of the Calbayognons.

Waterfalls and Different Hikes

The waterfalls also differ in their form. Tarangban Falls is tiered, with clear water cascading over rock formations. Bangon-Bugtong Falls is a waterfall system with a large, circular pool. Pan-as Falls, in turn, combines cascading water and clear pools with surrounding vegetation. If you’re choosing nature-focused destinations, you can distinguish between rock formations, a striking pool, and a landscape of water and greenery.

Different levels of difficulty are listed for the hikes. The trail to Ton-ok Falls is considered suitable for beginners. Hirot Falls is in Barangay Macatingog and can be reached via a challenging hike involving river crossings and steep paths. These are distinctly different trail profiles and therefore important differences to consider when choosing. If you’re planning a specific hike, it’s advisable to check current access and trail conditions.

Coast and Islands

Malajog Beach offers a maritime landscape, where blue water meets limestone cliffs. The beach is used for swimming and island-hopping to Daraga Islet. Daraga Islet is associated with clear water and opportunities for snorkeling. The turtle-shaped Binaliw Isle offers another island focus: its features include white sand beaches, marine life such as corals and sea turtles, and opportunities for diving and snorkeling. These coastal and island settings complement the waterfalls, without promising the same kind of nature experience.

Rock Formations, a Spring and a Protected Landscape

Away from the waterfalls, Mawacat Slide features a distinctive rock formation: the natural formation resembles a giant spoon, is about 50 meters long and has a 45-degree slope. At Mapaso Hot Spring, warm, mineral-rich spring water and artificially fed pools define the site. Both places add features to the selection that are clearly distinct from waterfalls and coastal settings.

The Calbayog Pan-as Hayiban Protected Landscape covers around 7,832 hectares. It was designated by Presidential Proclamation No. 1158 on February 3, 1998, to protect and preserve the area’s ecological, biological, scientific and educational features. Its designation and conservation purpose give the landscape a different focus from individual natural formations.

Choose Your Travel Focus

For your own plans, you can start by clearly separating your interests: the cathedral and museums represent architectural history and collections; waterfalls, hikes, rock formations and islands offer different nature and activity profiles. If you’re looking for hotels in Calbayog City, first decide which experiences you want your trip to revolve around. Then compare accommodation locations based on your personal plans, rather than assuming a fixed order for visiting the destinations.
