Lago Sauce, also known as Laguna Azul, lies on the shore of the town of Sauce. Both names refer to the same body of water and help you identify the lake when planning your trip. Lago Sauce is located in the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park. Cascadas Pucayacu is also in this buffer zone. The lake and waterfalls therefore share a connection to the same landscape, but offer different kinds of nature experiences: Lago Sauce centers on the body of water by the town shore, while at Pucayacu a walking trail leads to the waterfalls.
Cascadas Pucayacu on foot
Cascadas Pucayacu, also called Cataratas Pucayacu, is located in the CaserĂo La Primavera in the Sauce District. A walking trail leads from the CaserĂo La Primavera to the waterfalls; the walk takes 30 minutes. Knowing that the walk takes half an hour helps you plan your time.
Thermal baths and relaxation
Termales Don Grimaldo is a thermal bath facility for relaxation in the Sauce District. The offerings include a tour featuring medicinal black healing mud and access to thermal pools; handcrafted welcome drinks are also offered. Confirm the booking conditions before you arrive.
Ecoparque La Soñada: exhibition and nighttime excursion
A full-day tour at Ecoparque La Soñada includes a visit to the Hijos de Nuestra Tierra exhibition. The ecopark also offers a nighttime boat excursion departing from Sauce’s main port: the boat takes you on a guided search for nocturnal animals, after which the excursion returns to Sauce. The components of the full-day tour and details of the excursion may change. Check the latest information before planning your trip.
To choose based on time and activity, you can compare the offerings: the walk to Pucayacu takes 30 minutes, the exhibition is part of a full-day tour, and the boat excursion takes place at night. Walking time, the length of the day’s activities, and time of day answer different planning questions.
Lago Lindo and community-based tourism
According to a 2021 document from the Regional Government, a tourism project supported the community-based tourism business Dos de Mayo in the Sauce District. The support from the Regional Government was documented in 2021. If you want to include Dos de Mayo as a current destination in your plans, confirm locally that it is operating today.
Lago Lindo also offers another perspective on nature: its surroundings provide a habitat for the Shansho. Lago Lindo lies at the southern end of Laguna Azul. The properties bordering Lago Lindo are privately owned and are considered a private ecotourism reserve. Confirm access conditions before visiting. If you are particularly interested in habitats, this offers a different connection to nature than Cascadas Pucayacu: the surroundings of Lago Lindo provide a habitat for the Shansho.
