Moyobamba Province can be explored through a variety of travel interests: wetlands, thermal waters, a climb with a view and regional history each offer a different focus. When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Wetlands, Thermal Waters and a Climb
As part of the nature experience at Reserva EcolĂłgica Tingana, visitors can canoe along the RĂo Avisado through the wetlands. At Aguas Termales San Mateo, thermal waters take center stage: the baths lie at the foot of Cerro San Mateo, at an altitude of 960 meters, in the Selva Alta ecosystem. The distance from Moyobamba’s main square to the thermal springs is 5.1 kilometers; traveling by private car on a paved road takes 15 minutes.
Morro de Calzada offers another reason to take an excursion. An article published in El Peruano on September 28, 2024, describes the climb as a 1.5-kilometer zigzag path with partly rocky ground. The trail starts at the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn and ends at the viewpoint on the summit. Its length, shape and terrain offer specific points of reference for planning the climb.
Museum, Orientation and Tradition
The Museo Departamental San MartĂn has nine exhibition rooms. On display are archaeological, ethnographic and historical artifacts representing the earliest evidence of settlement in the Amazon region, particularly in the San MartĂn region. The museum therefore showcases more than a single collection; its exhibits relate to a range of evidence and themes from regional history.
Casa del Turista Onercocha in the community of ParaĂso del Alto Mayo is described as a center offering reception, orientation and other services before and after a visit to Laguna Onercocha. The Baño Bendito competition on the banks of Quebrada Rumiyacu is described as taking place annually on June 24. It is part of Moyobamba’s tourism week and the San Juan festivities. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.
The types of visits differ considerably: at Tingana, you can canoe through wetlands; at Morro de Calzada, a described trail leads to a summit viewpoint; and the museum’s nine rooms are devoted to archaeological, ethnographic and historical themes. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. There is also specific information on the journey to the thermal springs from Moyobamba’s main square.
