Caral brings together archaeological history and the landscape of the Supe River Valley. The Ciudad Sagrada de Caral-Supe is located nearby. When choosing this destination, you can plan around its monumental structures, the conditions of the walking route, and the history of the landscape together.

A 5,000-year-old archaeological site

The Ciudad Sagrada de Caral-Supe is 5,000 years old and is considered the oldest center of civilization in the Americas. Six large pyramidal structures define the site. The visitor route passes monumental pyramidal buildings, residential complexes, and temples. As you explore, you will see different types of buildings side by side: the pyramids are a prominent feature, but they are not the only focus of the route.

Access, route, and visitor rules

Access to the archaeological site is on foot, via a pedestrian bridge and through the Bosque de Huarangos. From there, a marked trail takes about 20 minutes to reach the visitor center. This approximate time helps you plan the walk on site; it does not describe the entire journey.

You may visit the visitor route only when accompanied by a local guide or cultural interpreter authorized by the Zona Arqueológica Caral. Guided groups are limited to ten people. One section of the route is accessible to people with motor disabilities or limited mobility. Check the current access and route conditions before your visit.

The visitor center has parking, restrooms, a ticket office, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, handicrafts, and tourist information to help you plan your visit. This lets you take care of some practical arrangements as part of your visit to the archaeological site.

Landscape and orientation around Caral

The Ciudad Sagrada near Caral is located on a dry alluvial desert terrace above the Supe River Valley. Another trace of the landscape is the Bosque milenario de huarangos: a remnant of the former riparian forest that stretched along both banks of the valley. During the Caral civilization, this forest was respected, preserved, and regularly maintained.

A useful landmark for navigating the Caral–Minas Ámbar route is the turnoff to the pedestrian bridge: after 23 kilometers, turn toward the bridge at the level of the Centro de la Ciudad de Caral. There is also alternative Route B to the Ciudad Sagrada via the riverbed. It is available only during the dry river months, from mid-May to mid-November. If you are considering this route, check conditions before your trip.

Regional cuisine and Caral

A culinary initiative is also part of the local scene. In 2019, the “Vianderas de Caral” program offered visitors and tourists typical regional dishes and desserts; women from the centro poblado de Caral took part. If this offering is important to your travel plans, check locally to see whether it is currently available.

The program modules described in 2019 were made from organic materials such as caña brava and caña Guayaquil, as well as stone and clay. Their architectural style was modeled on some buildings in the urban centers of the Caral civilization. The initiative thus combines regional cuisine with an architectural style that also evokes Caral’s history.
