An oasis with emerald-green water, surrounded by desert, dunes, vegetation, and a waterfront promenade: Laguna de Huacachina showcases a striking blend of water and desert landscape in Ica. It was declared the Laguna de Huacachina Regional Conservation Area. Its protected-area status adds another perspective to the distinctive landscape of this place.

Desert, Water, and Islands

The Ballestas Islands also offer a different relationship between water and landscape. They consist of three islands with arch-shaped landforms created by marine erosion. Unlike the Huacachina oasis, where emerald-green water is part of a landscape surrounded by desert and dunes, the Ballestas are defined by island arches shaped by the sea. Tourist boat transport to the Ballestas Islands is available.

An Archaeological Cultural Landscape

The Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas de Jumana are an archaeological site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This highly symbolic cultural landscape has been preserved for more than two millennia. Its designs include living creatures, stylized plants, and imaginary beings, as well as geometric figures several kilometers long.

Another archaeological testament is the Cahuachi Ceremonial Center. The archaeological zone belongs to the Nasca culture and is part of Peru’s National Cultural Heritage. Its central area includes several truncated adobe pyramids. The two sites thus differ in their form of expression: the Lines and Geoglyphs foreground designs and a symbolic cultural landscape, while Cahuachi is defined by pyramid architecture.

Pisco, Wine, and Winemaking Traditions

The production of wine and pisco is also part of the region’s attractions. Bodega El Catador is a family-run winery in Subtanjalla that produces both drinks. Visitor activities include a visit to the vineyard and an area for tastings. If you plan to take part, please check current booking arrangements before your trip.

Bodega VitivinĂcola Finca 314 in Tate highlights another aspect of the pisco tradition: it preserves the original infrastructure of a winery dating from 1821, as well as a family tradition of artisanal pisco production spanning more than 190 years. The two wineries therefore have different points of focus: El Catador offers vineyard visits and tastings, while Finca 314 is notable for its preserved infrastructure and family production tradition.

A Route by Bicycle or ATV

For activity-focused trip planning, the Paracas National Reserve offers a specific option: the North Tourist Circuit is 26 kilometers long and can be traveled by bicycle or ATV. Both modes of transport use the same route, so you can choose according to your plans. Check current access conditions before setting out.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Ica, you can start with your travel interests: would you like to focus on Huacachina’s oasis landscape, archaeological heritage, the islands, or winemaking traditions? Then you can assess the options based on your personal requirements.
