Urubamba brings together historic sites in the town with an archaeological destination nearby and views across the valley to the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera de Vilcanota. These highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: Palacio de Wayna Qhapac and Templo de San Pedro ApĂłstol provide specific points of interest for a visit to the town; Zona ArqueolĂłgica Monumental de Media Luna involves a drive followed by a walk. If you are looking for a hotel in Urubamba, first consider whether your trip is focused on the cultural sites, an excursion to the terraces, or a festival date.

Historic Sites in the Town

Palacio de Wayna Qhapac lies east of Urubamba’s Plaza de Armas, along the continuation of Avenida Mariscal Castilla. In 2003, Resolution DIR. NAC. No. 516/INC-2003 declared it National Cultural Heritage.

Templo de San Pedro Apóstol is 73 meters from the Plaza de Armas. It was built from local stone and lime between 1649 and 1686. The dates refer to different events: 2003 to its declaration as Cultural Heritage, and 1649 to 1686 to the construction of the temple. The palace’s location, its cultural heritage status, and the temple’s construction history can therefore be considered as distinct historical points of reference.

Terraces and Resources in Media Luna

Near Urubamba, in the Comunidad de Media Luna, lies Zona Arqueológica Monumental de Media Luna. The pre-Hispanic complex consists of agricultural terraces that made use of the valley’s soil, climate, and water resources. Unlike the structures in the town, Media Luna draws attention to the earlier use of resources through terracing.

From the Plaza de Armas, it is first 5 kilometers and 12 minutes by car to the Comunidad de Media Luna, followed by 0.7 kilometers and 15 minutes on foot. Plan the route in two stages: a drive followed by a walk.

The Valley and the Cordillera de Vilcanota

Urubamba lies almost at the center of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. From Urubamba, you can see the valley and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera de Vilcanota. The first detail places the town in its regional context; the second describes the view from the town. Alongside the cultural sites, the valley location and the visible mountain backdrop are further aspects to consider when planning a stay.

Festival Calendar and Venue

Villa de Urubamba has an annual festival calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific date before setting your travel dates. Quespiwanca Tinkuy takes place on the platform immediately beside the façade of Palacio de Wayna Qhapaq. The festival calendar helps with planning when to visit; the platform’s location identifies where Quespiwanca Tinkuy is held.
