Quillabamba brings together the city’s history, a distinctive cocoa and coffee culture, and activities along the Río Vilcanota. You can plan your trip around different interests: the plaza and museum in the city, COCLA’s facilities, or river areas in and near Quillabamba. You can choose your accommodation based on what interests you most during your stay.

City History, Fiesta and Plaza

The historic city of Quillabamba was founded on July 25, 1857. The Fiesta de Quillabamba takes place from July 25 to 29 to mark the anniversary of the political founding of the province of La Convención, which dates back to 1857. The city’s founding date and the province’s anniversary are therefore two distinct historical references. If you are planning your trip around the Fiesta, confirm the event dates before booking.

The Plaza de Armas is considered the city’s most important place; typical gardens, palm trees and ornamental plants shape the square. The municipal tourist information office is also located there: Jr. Espinar N.° 306, at the Plaza de Armas. It is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 17:30. Check the opening hours before visiting.

Museum and Regional History

Founded in 2008, the Museo Amazónico Andino Qhapaq Ñan – Quillabamba is a permanent, publicly accessible, nonprofit cultural institution. Its permanent exhibition covers the geography and biodiversity of the province’s ancestral territories, as well as the cultures of the Amazonian-Andean region that live there today. The museum therefore brings together landscape and cultural themes rather than focusing on a single historical period.

The collections include material on the Inca period. They include archaeological finds from several sites in the region, including Choquequirao, Espíritu Pampa, Vilcabamba and Vitkus. Visitors interested in the region’s history will find a complementary perspective on different places and periods here.

Cocoa, Coffee and COCLA

Coffee, cocoa and fruit are among Quillabamba’s most important local products. Chuncho cocoa has a special role: it is a native crop domesticated by the local community. The largest growing areas were established more than 100 years ago. This history makes cocoa a tangible way to explore local agriculture, while coffee and fruit complete the picture of the region’s produce.

The Escuela de Café at the Planta Industrial de COCLA offers specialized courses in tasting specialty coffee. Visits to the Planta Industrial must be arranged in advance with the administration; confirm the contact details before planning your visit. The facility is located at Av. Edgar de la Torre N.° 1353 in Quillabamba. According to the route information, it is about 2 kilometers or an eight-minute drive from the Plaza de Armas; the walking route is listed as about 1 kilometer or 20 minutes. These are estimates, not guaranteed current travel times.

Río Vilcanota and Nearby River Areas

The Balneario de Sambaray, located near Quillabamba, offers another focus for visitors. It sits on the banks of the Río Vilcanota amid lush tropical scenery, where visitors can go for walks and canoeing. The balneario includes a municipal zoo, considered a center for the care of rescued wildlife, as well as conservation and tourism education. From Plaza Grau, Sambaray can be reached by mototaxi via a paved road. Estimated distances and times are 2.5 kilometers and five minutes; road conditions may affect the journey.

The areas of Balsa Grande, Balsa Chica and El Encuentro on the Río Vilcanota near Quillabamba are also options for riverside walks, kayaking and swimming. Water conditions vary by season; check local information about conditions. Promotional and development activities for canoeing are also conducted within the city along the Maranura–La Balsa stretch. Since seasonal and operator conditions may change, check them before planning a canoe trip.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

Quillabamba is considered the main gateway to the Megantoni protected area and complements the valley’s nature and adventure tourism. The city also offers opportunities for various sports activities. When planning, it helps to distinguish this general overview from specific river activities: walks, kayaking and swimming are mentioned for certain nearby areas, while canoeing development activities are described for the Maranura–La Balsa stretch. This lets you consider culture, local produce and river activities as separate interests without combining them into a fixed itinerary.
