Jaén combines an annual patron saint festival with archaeological sites and trips to coffee and trout farms in the surrounding area. When looking for a hotel in Jaén, it helps to first decide which themes interest you: culture in the city and nearby area, or farms and natural attractions farther afield. Distances also vary: Montegrande is 3.5 kilometers south of the city, while Aguas Termales del Almendral is 25 kilometers from Jaén.

Culture and History Around Jaén

Jaén celebrates an annual patron saint festival in honor of its patron, Señor de Huamantanga. The main day of the festival is September 14; the exact dates in the program may vary from year to year. If you are traveling to attend specific events, check the program for that year.

The archaeological site of Montegrande is nearby. It includes the first monumental architecture with a public and religious character discovered in the Peruvian Amazon region. Members of the Marañón culture built the site from earth and rock 5,300 years ago; research there is ongoing. On November 17, 2009, Montegrande was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Its great age, building materials, and public and religious functions offer a different perspective from the city’s festival traditions.

About two kilometers from the center of Jaén, the “Hermógenes Mejía Solf” Regional Museum is housed in the building of the “4 de junio de 1821” Technological Institute. It displays numerous archaeological artifacts, particularly from the Pakamuros culture, including ceramics, goldwork, stone artifacts, and fossils. Other areas cover anthropology, paleontology, art, natural sciences, and archaeology. Exhibitions may change; check current access arrangements and opening hours before planning a visit.

Coffee, Agriculture and Experiences in the Surrounding Area

Finca Agro Apícola La Arboleda is 6.2 kilometers from Jaén. During a visit arranged in advance, you can explore the coffee plantations and apiary, approach the beehives, learn about the queen bee, and watch worker bees produce honey. A visit must be arranged in advance, so confirm the date beforehand.

Finca Paraíso de La Trucha is 24 kilometers from Jaén and combines coffee farming, trout farming, and experiential tourism. The experience offers a glimpse into the hosts’ daily lives: visitors can harvest peas, potatoes, and coffee, as well as feed the animals. The organic coffee varieties featured are Catimor, Borbón, and Caturra. Its activities therefore differ from the plantation and apiary visits at La Arboleda, even though coffee is part of both experiences.

The restaurant at Finca Paraíso de La Trucha serves dishes including fried trout, trout chicharrón, and coffee brewed in a pot. Check whether the restaurant is open before setting out. The forest around the farm is home to the cock-of-the-rock, huataracos, majaz, armadillos, and porcupines; these animals are part of the area’s natural setting, but sightings are not guaranteed.

Nature Attractions and Excursions Near Jaén

The Botanical Garden is four kilometers southeast of Jaén, in the Fila Alta sector, third stage, and showcases more than 600 plant varieties from the region. The Mirador Jaén viewpoint offers views of the entire city and the surrounding green valleys and slopes. The two places offer different ways to experience the landscape: the garden through its plant diversity, and the viewpoint through its expansive views. Check current access arrangements before visiting the garden.

Cascada Santa Fe is 16.9 kilometers from Jaén. From the hamlet of Santa Fe, a 15-minute walk leads to the waterfall. Local guidance is recommended for the route; ask about current trail conditions before setting out.
