San Pedro combines municipal visitor information with an archaeological site in the nearby area: Chillwamarka. The district also has cultural features, including a festival and a fair approved for 2025. When planning, it is useful to distinguish between the different areas: the tourist information office is in San Pedro, Chillwamarka is near Santa Isabel, and the cultural information refers to the district.

Getting your bearings between the town and the district

The municipal tourist information office is located at Avenida José María Arguedas No. 344 in San Pedro. Check its opening arrangements locally before relying on a visit. The Municipality of San Pedro promotes the tourist corridor of the San Pedro District. This means there is both a specific point of contact in the town and a broader tourist framework at the district level.

Chillwamarka: pre-Inca complex near Santa Isabel

Chillwamarka, also known in the San Pedro District as Ñaupallaccta (“old village”), is a pre-Inca urban complex in the area around San Pedro, in the Santa Isabel area. The site covers approximately 36 hectares and lies at an elevation of about 3,400 meters. The remains include circular buildings, palaces, and dwellings of the Chillwamarkas. The area figure refers to the complex as a whole; the surviving buildings display different forms within the site.

The route to the archaeological zone is described as a combination of driving and walking: from Plaza San Pedro, a minibus (combi) takes about 15 minutes to travel 3.6 kilometers to Santa Isabel. From there, it is about 550 meters, or approximately ten minutes on foot, to the Chillwamarka zone. Confirm the route locally before making firm plans based on these times and distances.

Festive culture in the San Pedro District

Congress considered Bill 12967/2025-CR, which sought to declare the “Sequia Tusuy – Fiesta del Agua” festival in the San Pedro District part of the nation’s intangible cultural heritage. The festival expresses Andean understandings of water, reciprocity (ayni), community organization, and the agricultural cycle. Ayni means reciprocity; together with the references to water and agriculture, the festival’s content also points to communal ties.

The XXIX Feria Distrital Agropecuaria, Agroindustrial, Gastronómica, Artesanal, Folklórica San Pedro was approved for 2025. Its official name refers to agriculture, agro-industry, gastronomy, handicrafts, and folklore. The Estadio Municipal de Panteón Pampa in the San Pedro District was designated as the venue. The cultural themes therefore differ: the festival highlights water, reciprocity, and community organization, while the fair’s title brings together several agricultural and cultural fields.

Chillwamarka and festive culture thus offer different ways to explore San Pedro: the nearby area is known for its pre-Inca architecture, while at the district level, the cultural significance and themes of the festival and the approved fair come to the fore.
