Huanta combines a cultural and historical center around the Plaza de Armas with scenic views, a river, and nearby destinations. When planning your trip, this mix makes it important to choose your focus: the plaza and church represent history and architecture, while the mirador and valley offer other excursion options. When looking for a hotel in Huanta, you can decide whether your stay will focus mainly on the town itself or also include the nearby landscape and local cuisine.

Culture at the Plaza de Armas

Huanta’s Plaza de Armas is part of Peru’s national cultural heritage and is designated an “Ambiente Urbano Monumental” (Monumental Urban Setting). It dates from 1852. The Iglesia San Pedro Matriz de Huanta stands on the plaza and dates from 1724; the two dates refer to different structures. The Capilla del Rosario preserves the church’s original structure and is the oldest part of the Iglesia. Construction of the fountain on the plaza began in 1862 and was completed in 1869.

The Óvalo de la Madre Huantina is part of the traditional walking tour of Huanta. Parque de Amílcar Gamarra covers 150 m² and features a life-size statue of Huanta-born artist Héctor Amílcar Gamarra Altamirano. Palms, pati trees, and jacarandas surround the plaza; retama blossoms are part of its design.

Views and Routes

The Mirador de la ciudad de Huanta offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. A municipal plan for 2020–2025 gives an approximate travel time of ten minutes from the plaza by mototaxi; this travel time may change. Check the current travel time before setting out.

El Obispo de Piedra Santiago Ophelan offers another point of reference: the sculpture is 50 meters from the plaza, about a three-minute walk. The difference between the short walking distance and the mototaxi ride is a reminder not to plan for these local routes using the same travel time.

The Cascada de Occochaca is also near Huanta; it is approximately 40 meters high. This adds a specific natural attraction to complement the views of the city.

Valle de Huanta and Local Cuisine

The Valle de Huanta is about ten minutes from the main plaza. Visitors can take boat trips along the river there; operating conditions may vary. Unlike the city views from the mirador, this option centers on the river.

There are also two local options to consider when planning meals: near the Valle de Huanta, recreos campestres serve typical local cuisine made with regional produce. Most shops selling Chicha 7 semillas are in the traditional Barrio de 5 Esquinas; what individual shops offer may change. This lets you plan regional dishes and the traditional drink as distinct culinary experiences.
