Mollendo offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: an extensive coastline, Castillo Forga, a former railway station now used for cultural activities, and seafood as part of the local cuisine. The beaches, buildings, and cultural offerings each have their own focus. You can prioritize your interests without reducing the coast and the city’s history to the same experience.

Beaches and Coastline

Playa Mollendina stretches for approximately 9 km, from the First Beach to Sombrero Grande. The First Beach is 268 m long and about 75 m wide at its midpoint. This width varies with sea movement. The two measurements help put the coastline into perspective: the approximate length describes the distance between the named endpoints, while the measurements refer to a single beach section. For planning purposes, it is therefore helpful to distinguish the size of Playa Mollendina as a whole from the dimensions of the First Beach.

The First and Second Beaches have food and drink options, parking, showers, changing rooms, and toilets. Seasonal availability may vary. If these facilities are important to your choice of beach section, check their specific availability for your travel dates.

Using the Costanera for Orientation

The Costanera runs along the Third Beach. It is a road open to vehicles and part of the coastal route. It connects all the beach sections to the Valle de Tambo. These provide two distinct points of reference: Playa Mollendina describes the stretch of coastline from the First Beach to Sombrero Grande, while the Costanera identifies the road connecting the beach sections. For travelers finding their way by car, the road is a specific reference point along the coast. The length and the coastal route provide different information about Mollendo’s beach area.

Castillo Forga Between Two Beaches

Castillo Forga is located between the Second and Third Beaches of Mollendo. Construction began in 1924; the exact year it was completed is unknown. From Castillo Forga’s concrete balconies, built in the eclectic style, you can see Beaches No. 1 and No. 2 on the Arequipa coast. The location, construction history, and view describe different aspects of the building: its location places it between two beach sections, while the view focuses on the First and Second Beaches.

Railway Station and Cultural Center

Mollendo’s railway station is by the sea, in the lower part of the city, 3.5 m above sea level and opposite the First Beach. The former railway station has been converted into the Mollendo Cultural Center. It has exhibition halls for cultural events such as press conferences, concerts, anthologies, and art and photography exhibitions; the Museum of Chiribaya Culture is also located there. Individual exhibitions and events vary. The Cultural Center thus combines the station’s former use with exhibition and event spaces, while the museum offers a distinct cultural focus.

Sea Views and Cuisine

Muelle Turístico Mollendo offers places to relax and views of the seascape. Facilities may change; if you plan to visit the pier, check the current status before your visit. Restaurants in Caleta de Catarindo serve seafood, which is part of Mollendo’s cuisine. Individual restaurants may change. This gives you both a place to enjoy sea views and a specific culinary connection to the city to consider when planning your trip.
