Explore Camaná through its history, cultural attractions and the cuisine of the Camaná Valley. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the town and its wider surroundings: the Museo Arqueológico La Inmaculada and the historical landmarks are in Camaná; Playa La Punta is a beach resort nearby. This way, you can first decide whether to focus on local history and culture, regional products or the coast as well.

The town’s history in three stages

Camaná’s history can be traced through three distinct stages. Camaná was founded in 1539 and resettled on September 28, 1557. Later, on November 9, 1839, a decree issued during the presidency of Marshal Agustín Gamarra elevated the town from a villa to a “Ciudad Hermosa.” The founding, resettlement and elevation to city status refer to different moments and should not be conflated into a single event. The Pueblo Tradicional de Camaná is classified as a historic site in the category of cultural manifestations.

Museum, main square and city tour

The Museo Arqueológico La Inmaculada displays ceramics, painted textiles and goldwork. The materials on display are considered evidence of the power and prestige achieved by Camaná’s ancestors. A visit to the museum is also included in Camaná’s cultural route. The Cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel stands by the main square. Palm trees with a history spanning more than 100 years stand in the main square of the Pueblo Tradicional de Camaná.

Another cultural detail can be found on Bulevar 28 de Julio: in the first block stands a sculpture depicting cockfighting, a tradition deeply rooted in the province. The Camaná city tour takes you to the center and includes the Plaza de Armas. This gives it a different focus from the cultural route, which includes a museum visit. If you plan to visit the museum or take a tour, check the opening hours or confirm that the tour is currently operating and check its times in advance.

Market and cuisine in the Camaná Valley

Tourists visiting the Mercado Central de Camaná buy typical products there when they arrive. The product selection may vary. The market is a specific stop in Camaná, while the cuisine featuring rice, shrimp, lima beans, beans, fish and seafood is associated with the Camaná Valley. Regional cuisine also includes a wide selection of local bread and pastries, as well as traditional sweets. If food is of interest to you, keep these different scales in mind: the market visit relates to the town, while the culinary categories mentioned are associated with the valley.

Getting there and climate

You can reach Camaná from Arequipa by public bus or minivan. The paved route is about 175 kilometers long, and the journey takes around three hours. Actual travel time may vary depending on road conditions, so treat this estimate as a rough guide. Camaná has a very warm, sunny climate year-round. This climate description applies to the town throughout the year and is not limited to a particular travel season.

The nearby coast

Playa La Punta is located near the destination and is currently considered the best-known beach resort, as well as the one most visited by Camaná’s summer visitors. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between Camaná’s historical and cultural attractions and the coastal setting of the nearby area.
