Chachapoyas combines a historic city center with museums, viewpoints and festivals held throughout the year. Several themes can guide your trip planning: architecture, historical figures, regional culture and events. The Plaza Mayor is a shared destination for the routes listed from the airport and bus station.

Historic Center and Architecture

In 1988, the historic center of Chachapoyas was declared a National Cultural Heritage site for its outstanding historical and architectural value. It preserves buildings influenced by Spanish architecture, made of adobe and wood. These include two-story buildings with entrance halls, courtyards, back patios, corridors and balconies dating from the republican era. The pedestrian promenade along Jr. Amazonas also includes historic mansions.

Another historic site is the Pampas de Higos Urco. It was declared a Historic Monument on December 30, 1986, by Ministerial Resolution No. 796-86-ED. The site's historical significance is also reflected in a theatrical reenactment of the battle: after the commemorative parade at the Plazuela de la Independencia, people gather on the Pampas to watch it.

Museums and Local Traditions

In the historic center stands the Casa de Don Toribio RodrĂguez de Mendoza, his birthplace. RodrĂguez de Mendoza was a thinker and a forerunner of Peruvian independence. The Sala de Obispos in the house displays twelve portraits of bishops who led the Diocese of Chachapoyas. The collection thus provides a tangible connection to the diocese's ecclesiastical history.

The third exhibition section of the “Gilberto Tenorio Ruiz” Exhibition Hall displays stone artifacts: clubs, axes, batons and mortars, as well as a replica of a structure from Kuélap. Local tradition surrounding the Pozo Yana Yacu tells a different kind of story: it is said that anyone who drinks from it falls in love with a Chachapoyana and feels drawn to the city. This is a local tradition, not a description of an actual effect.

Viewpoints and Festivals

The Mirador de la Mama Nate and the Mirador de Santa Rosa de Luya Urco each offer panoramic views of the city. Two recurring events take place in different months of the calendar: the Semana TurĂstica de los Chachapoyas is held every June, while the religious festival of the Virgen Asunta is celebrated in August.

The Raymi Llaqta de los Chachapoya takes place every year in the historic center and includes cultural, social, recreational and historical activities. The program may vary. The reenactment on the Pampas de Higos Urco is a separate historical event: it follows the commemorative parade and theatrically reenacts the battle. Visitors who want to include events in their stay can take into account both the seasons when the festivals take place and their different historical contexts.

Arrival and Planning

The route from Chachapoyas Airport to the Plaza Mayor is listed as 6 kilometers and 13 minutes by private car. From the city's bus station to the Plaza Mayor, the journey by private car is 1.6 kilometers and 5 minutes. Both travel times are estimates; road conditions and routes may change. The Plaza Mayor therefore provides a shared reference point for understanding the arrival routes mentioned above. Plan your accommodations and sightseeing around the topics that interest you, and check route details before setting out.

In the Wider Chachapoyas Destination

The wider Chachapoyas destination also offers distinctive cultural attractions. The Museo Leymebamba is part of Peru's National Museum System and houses 2,300 archaeological objects from the Chachapoya-Inca culture. The Pueblo Alfarero Huancas is recognized as a National Cultural Heritage site, among other reasons for preserving traditional pottery techniques and maintaining a living ceramic tradition. Visitors can watch the production process and purchase original ceramic pieces there. These regional cultural sites broaden the experience beyond the city; they showcase museum collections and crafts, while the city center brings together its own attractions in architecture, historic spaces and festivals.
