In the Distrito de Soná, coastal scenery, nature and recurring festivals offer different reasons to visit. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Soná, you can first decide whether to plan your stay around a festival date, the Pacific coast or nature experiences.

Pacific Coast, Beach and Mangroves

The mangrove areas along Soná’s Pacific coast are part of the Humedal del Golfo de Montijo wetland, which is designated as a Ramsar site. They also lie within the buffer zone of Parque Nacional Coiba. These two designations place the mangrove landscape both within a designated wetland and within the national park’s buffer zone.

Santa Catalina beach is right in the village, at the end of the paved road. Santa Catalina is considered one of the best beaches in Central America for surfing. Bahía Honda offers a different coastal experience: its calm, deep waters are suitable for relaxation, and Bahía Honda is considered a natural deep-water port for cruise ships. The distinction is clear when choosing a coastal focus: Santa Catalina is associated with surfing, while Bahía Honda is associated with relaxing beside calm, deep water.

Coiba and Nature Experiences Nearby

Near Soná, Granito de Oro in Parque Nacional Coiba is a stop for visitors to sunbathe, snorkel and dive. The island has coral formations and is home to sea turtles and brightly coloured fish. Parque Nacional Coiba is also in the wider area around Soná and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park can be reached in about an hour by boat from the Pacific coast of Veraguas, near Santa Catalina. This travel time is an estimate; boat schedules and operating conditions may vary.

Festivals and Cultural Heritage

The San Isidro Labrador patron saint festival takes place every year on May 15 and brings together communities from across the Distrito de Soná. Every year on November 5, the Paseo Folclórico y de la Pollera winds through the district’s main streets with floats, folk groups and pollera performances. El Grito de la Mujer Sonaeña is commemorated annually on November 8. The commemoration remembers 71 women who signed an act of accession. These fixed dates offer three different points of reference for planning a trip; check the specific event schedules in advance.

The Feria Soná offers a different focus: it showcases national and international exhibitors and brings together crafts, tourism, industry and agriculture. A lasting cultural landmark is the mausoleum of Father José Félix Guembe next to Santuario San José. A marble statue in his likeness stands above the coffin.

Getting Around the Distrito de Soná

In the district capital of Soná, the public transport operators UTRANSUR, LA SAN CRISTOBAL and SAN ISIDRO, as well as COOTRAJOHT’s taxi service, operate from Monday to Sunday. These services cover all communities in the Distrito de Soná. Check current routes and service frequencies before travelling so you can plan your journeys accordingly.

For hiking, the ATP-MIDA agrotourism register, updated in April 2024, lists Rancho Don Chicho in the Corregimiento Quebrada de Oro. Check that it is currently operating before planning a visit that requires access. This helps distinguish the attraction from the coastal and cultural features described as ongoing.

Veraguas as a Regional Setting

Beyond Soná, Veraguas offers a range of nature destinations. Reserva Forestal La Yeguada covers 7,090 hectares and has a 97-hectare lake. A 2022 description notes favourable conditions for camping and recreation and reports thousands of visitors each year. If you’re considering camping, check the conditions and required permits before your trip.

In Santa Fe, also in Veraguas, Finca El Salto has waterfalls and petroglyphs. Excursions for whale watching and observing marine wildlife along the Pacific coast of Veraguas also depart from the port of Santa Catalina. Check the season and tour operators in advance for whale watching.
