Portobelo lies within the Portobelo National Park, which covers more than 35,000 hectares, and combines natural attractions with a layered historical heritage. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the sights in town from activities in the wider travel area. This can help you decide whether cultural heritage, nearby boat destinations or a longer hike should be the focus. That is more than 350 square kilometres.

Cultural Heritage in Portobelo

The Iglesia San Juan de Dios is part of the Conjunto Monumental Histórico de Portobelo. Today, only ruins of the church remain. The battery and fortified house of San Fernando, on the other side of the bay, are also part of the same complex. The complex’s components therefore represent different building purposes and forms of cultural heritage: church ruins and fortifications.

Castillo de San Felipe is one of Portobelo’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The customs house also tells the story of the town’s architecture: it was built between 1630 and 1634, later destroyed and abandoned, and subsequently restored. Today, it houses the Museo de la Memoria Afro Panameña. Portobelo’s historical heritage thus includes both fortifications and a restored customs house now serving as a museum.

In 2025, Portobelo hosted the 14th Festival de Diablos y Congos: RaĂces, Tambores y Danzas.

Boat Trips and Hikes

From the landing in Portobelo, you can reach Playa Huertas, Puerto Francés or Playa Larga by boat in just a few minutes. The short travel time offers a different point of reference from the longer hikes in the wider travel area and helps you weigh up different excursions.

On the Sendero del Salto de los Monos, you can hike part of the trail or the entire route. The full hike takes approximately six hours and leads to a 110-metre-high waterfall. At RĂo Indio, you can hike through the forest, visit waterfalls and learn about medicinal and edible plants. The two options offer different focuses: on the Sendero, you can choose between a section and the full hike; at RĂo Indio, hiking is combined with visiting waterfalls and learning about plants.

When looking for a hotel in Portobelo, it is helpful to distinguish in advance between the cultural sites in town and activities in the wider travel area. The short boat trip from the landing and the approximately six-hour full hike are different blocks of time; on the Sendero, you can also hike just part of the route. This lets you plan your trip around the themes and time frame that matter to you.
