Al Wasil Fort is a landmark of the village and a tangible link to local history. It is one of the oldest forts in the Wilayat of Bidiyah and was also the first fort built there. Four fortified towers and an inner market make the complex easy to appreciate as a structure, too. Another connection to the area is the “Al Wasil” health walk, which took place on April 3, 2026.
Al Wasil Fort and its history
As the first fort in the Wilayat of Bidiyah, the fort marks the order in which the forts were built; as one of the oldest, it is also among the Wilayat’s earliest forts. Its role as a landmark, by contrast, relates to the village of Al Wasil. For geographic context, it is useful to distinguish the village connection from the history of the Wilayat: the fort is closely linked to the village, but its historical significance is considered at the Wilayat level.
The Al-Hajriyin built the fort as a defensive structure. It has four fortified towers and an inner market. Its defensive function and the specific features of the complex are both relevant to understanding it. The towers are part of the fortified structure; the market is inside the fort. Together, these features give the fort more substance than a simple reference to its age: they connect its construction, purpose, and an inner market.
The Ministry of National Heritage and Culture restored the fort. Construction and restoration are separate stages in its history: the Al-Hajriyin built it as a defensive structure, and it was later restored by the ministry. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting options in advance.
The health walk and its routes
Another aspect of Al Wasil is the “Al Wasil” health walk, which took place on April 3, 2026. It was held in Al Wasil and included three routes. Two were each 1.5 kilometers long, but were intended for different groups: one for people with disabilities and older people, the other for women and children. The two shorter routes can therefore be compared by their equal distance and different target groups.
The third route was more than 6 kilometers long and was intended for professionals, athletes, and various walking groups. It was therefore more than four times as long as either of the two 1.5-kilometer routes. Comparing the three options thus involves two factors: distance and intended group. The two shorter routes had the same distance, but were assigned to different groups; the longer route stood apart both in distance and in its target group.
The two topics have different time frames for planning your trip. The fort represents the architectural and cultural history of the village and the Wilayat; the health walk is a specifically dated event from April 2026. If you are interested in Al Wasil because historic forts appeal to you, the fort is the more direct point of interest. The walk, by contrast, should be considered an event held on the stated date.
