Sébaco combines its own city history and religious traditions with archaeological heritage in the municipality of Sébaco. The traditional Diana procession passes through Sébaco, and Cerro de la Cruz lies within the city; Chagüitillo and Paso Real are communities in the municipality. The city’s own history has also been shaped by relocation. Over time, Sébaco changed location four times: from Sébaco Viejo to Los Congos and Tecuanapa, and finally to its present location.
Traditions and History in Sébaco
A traditional Diana procession in honor of the patron saint passes through the entire city in the early morning, accompanied by music and fireworks. It offers a glimpse of a local religious tradition, but does not establish a date for any particular current year. Cerro de la Cruz is another focal point for religious activities: traditionally, it was a gathering place, especially during the celebrations for Día de la Santa Cruz on May 3.
The hill lies in the higher eastern part of the city and is suitable for outdoor walks. It brings together two distinct interests: its traditional religious significance and the opportunity to spend time outdoors. If you plan a walk, you can treat the hill as a destination in its own right; the traditional celebration on May 3, by contrast, describes a cultural context and is not a promise of a current program.

Archaeological Heritage in the Municipality of Sébaco
The community of Chagüitillo is home to petroglyphs, monoliths, and pre-Columbian remains. There, the Museo Arqueológico de Chagüitillo preserves funerary urns, stone tools, pottery, and other objects relating to the history of the first inhabitants of the Valle de Sébaco. The pre-Hispanic sites Santuario Los Venados and Santuario Apamico are also near the community. These places are in the municipality of Sébaco and should therefore be distinguished from the attractions mentioned in the city of Sébaco.
The two sanctuaries offer different points of interest. Santuario Los Venados has rock carvings with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, as well as symbols associated with the beliefs and worldview of the region’s earlier inhabitants. Santuario Apamico is home to a petroglyph called Calendario Lunar de Apamico. Together with the Museo Precolombino de Chagüitillo, Los Venados and Apamico make up an archaeological route for cultural and scientific tourism. Check whether each site is accessible before visiting.
A Different Focus for Activities
In the municipality of Sébaco, the Centro recreativo Paso Real in the community of Paso Real, on the Río Viejo, offers opportunities for artisanal fishing and kayaking. This is a different focus from the museums and archaeological sites: here, activities on the river take center stage. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you are most interested in city history and religious traditions, archaeological heritage in the communities, or activities on the Río Viejo. Distinguishing between the city and the municipality helps you place the locations mentioned in their correct geographic context.
