San Rafael del Norte brings together the Baroque Santuario El Tepeyac and the history of Blanca Araúz and Augusto C. Sandino. The municipality’s picture is rounded out by Parque Municipal Urania Zelaya, with its green spaces and recreational areas, and the landscape around Cascadas Verdes–La Unión. When planning your trip, you can choose among different focal points: religious architecture, museum history, and nature.
Santuario El Tepeyac: architectural history and religious significance
Santuario El Tepeyac was built in 1976 in the Baroque style and is dedicated to the Virgen de Guadalupe. Thirty-six steps lead to the sanctuary. Each symbolizes spiritual purification and is considered a ritual act of penance. The site’s religious significance can also be put into context: the Santuario is regarded as one of the country’s most important pilgrimage centers.
Santuario y Museo El Tepeyac is located in the urban area of San Rafael del Norte. A visit includes a tour of the Santuario, a visit to the historical museum, and areas for recreation and meditation. Confirm the current visitor arrangements before you travel, especially if you are coming for a tour or to see the museum. This lets you take the information into account when planning without assuming a specific schedule.
Museum: Blanca Araúz and Augusto C. Sandino
The Museo EDSN Blanca Arauz is located in the municipality of San Rafael del Norte, in the house where Blanca Araúz was born. The building also served as the headquarters of General Augusto C. Sandino. The museum opened on July 16, 2019, and has three rooms. Its exhibits connect the life stories of the two historical figures with objects from their world.
On display are photographs relating to the history of Augusto C. Sandino and Blanca Araúz, along with period objects, a telegraph device, and a filing cabinet. There are also original wooden doors from 1915 that were used in their telegraph office. These details give a visit to the museum a concrete focus: alongside photographs and biographies, attention is also drawn to communication equipment and the office’s historical furnishings. This offers a different perspective on local history from the Santuario’s religious architectural history.
Parque Municipal Urania Zelaya
Parque Municipal Urania Zelaya is located in the town center of the municipality and offers green spaces and recreational areas. A monument to General Augusto C. Sandino stands at the center of the park. In this way, the park combines a recreational space with a public memorial site. This offers a different focus from the historical exhibition in the museum: here the monument is outdoors, while photographs and objects tell the story of Sandino and Blanca Araúz there.
Waterfalls and the Cerros de Yalí Nature Reserve
At the municipal level, Cascadas Verdes–La Unión adds a landscape-related attraction. The waterfall is located within Finca San Antonio in the municipality of La Unión and lies in the core zone of the Cerros de Yalí Nature Reserve. Information about the reserve describes a larger landscape than this single waterfall: it includes about 15 waterfalls, ranging from 7 to 72 meters in height.
The nature-related information therefore refers to different scales. Cascadas Verdes–La Unión is a location within Finca San Antonio; the approximate number of waterfalls and their height range refer to Cerros de Yalí as a whole. If culture is your main interest, you can weigh the Santuario’s religious significance against the museum’s historical artifacts. If you are more interested in the landscape, the waterfall and the nature reserve offer two clearly identified points of reference, though they do not refer to the same geographic level.
