Boaco combines a historic city center with Santiago traditions and regional cuisine. Exploring the city’s history leads to buildings, churches, and monuments; the patron saint festivities offer a different focus. There are also viewpoints and foods associated with Boaco. This makes it possible to discover the destination through a range of cultural themes without reducing it to a single attraction.

Historic Center and Museums

Boaco’s historic center includes old colonial-style buildings made of Taquezal, churches, parks, and monuments. On January 20, 2026, Nicaragua’s National Assembly declared the center a historic and cultural heritage site of the nation. The declaration honored the 159th birthday of Nicaraguan poet and writer Rubén Darío.

The Museo Comunitario Arturo Suárez Miranda is located downtown, north of the central park, on the street by the public library. Its exhibits include archaeological collections and photographs of cultural traditions. The Monumento a Santiago Apóstol also stands on the city’s Calle Central. It offers another specific point of reference for exploring the historic center.

Santiago Traditions in July

The patron saint festivities in honor of Santiago ApĂłstol run from July 22 to 31; the main feast days are July 24 and 25. The program includes religious celebrations, topes, and a procession of the Bailantes. Equestrian events, bull riding, rodeos, carnival, and cultural performances are also part of the festivities, as are the selection and crowning of festival queens. Dance events featuring national music groups and marching bands round out the program. Check the dates and program for the relevant year when planning your trip.

On July 25, the Baile de Moros y Cristianos, also known as “Los Bailantes,” is performed. The peasant devotees who perform it are known as Los Bailantes. The Comedia bailete de moros y cristianos is a centuries-old dance tradition in the Municipio de Boaco. It is performed by 36 peasants who venerate Santiago. Thus, the festivities highlight both the July 25 performance and the longer-standing dance tradition.

Monuments and Viewpoints

In the Municipio de Boaco, Parque del Centenario features a 20-meter-high lighthouse. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago ApĂłstol is also located in the same municipality. Under Decree No. 150, published on October 14, 1955, in Gaceta No. 233, it was declared a heritage site of the nation. The Museo de la RevoluciĂłn is also associated with the Municipio de Boaco.

In Boaco Arriba, the Monumento al Cacique Indígena Yarrince, built in 2011, stands on the main road. It honors an Indigenous leader who defended the region’s inhabitants against other tribes. Other monuments in the municipality are located in Parque José Nieboroswki, including those dedicated to heroes and martyrs and to Rubén Darío; the park also contains historic remains. Paseo de los Poetas, in turn, features monuments to prominent men who have received international recognition for their contributions to science.

The viewpoints each have a distinct significance: Mirador El Bailante was created in tribute to Boaco’s traditional dance. Faro el Cerrito is a viewpoint built to mark the centennial of Boaco’s founding. Mirador el Faro el Centenario offers a view of the city of Boaco. Visitors interested in these sites can distinguish between their connections to a dance, an anniversary, and a city view.

Foods from Boaco

Foods associated with Boaco include güirilas, elotes, tamales, and cosa de hornos, as well as native chicken soup and mondongo. Quesillo, cream, cuajada, cheese, and henchidas de res are also on the list. One particular eating custom concerns the enchiladita boaqueña: traditionally, it is eaten in a single bite. This cuisine offers a distinct way to experience local culture, alongside the architecture and festival traditions.

Departamento Boaco as a Regional Context

Beyond the city, Departamento Boaco offers a landscape perspective. Reserva Natural Cerro Mombachito La Vieja lies between the municipalities of Boaco and Camoapa; mountain ranges, plateaus, and hills of volcanic origin shape the area. The regional cultural context also includes Centro cultural arqueolĂłgico Las Lagunas, associated with more than 200 Indigenous petroglyphs in the municipality of Las Lagunas. In Camoapa, handicrafts include items made from pita fiber, leather, wood, and steel. These examples illustrate the variety of landscapes and cultural themes within Departamento Boaco.
