In Leigh, walking trails, seascapes and culture offer distinct experiences. Comparing the routes can help you choose: the Leigh Coastal Path is 2.2 kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes; the Leigh Harbour Walkway is a one-hour return walk. Despite the similar time estimates, they differ in what is at the heart of each route.

Coastal paths and views

The Leigh Coastal Path starts in Leigh. Along the way, there are views across Omaha Bay, Tāwharanui Regional Park, Goat Island and Little Barrier Island. The trail length and walking time of about 60 minutes give you two specific reference points for planning your day. The named viewpoints make this route an option if, as well as the harbour, you want to take in the wider coastal landscape.

The Leigh Harbour Walkway starts at the Leigh boat ramp and follows the rocky shoreline of the harbour. The hour includes the return walk. Compared with the Coastal Path, the difference is therefore less about duration than the route: here, the walk along the harbour’s edge is the focus. Check the current status of the Leigh Harbour Walkway before visiting.

Seascapes nearby

The Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve is near Leigh. The protected area extends 800 metres out to sea from the coast and includes Te Hāwere-a-Maki/Goat Island. Its ecosystems are in a healthier and more natural state than ecosystems outside its boundaries. Its extent and the comparison with the area beyond the reserve offer different insights into this marine environment.

Also nearby, the Goat Island Walkway passes beyond the marine laboratory, over cliffs, through pastureland and past preserved remnants of coastal broadleaf forest. The landscape therefore changes along the route, taking in cliffs, pastureland and forest remnants. This offers a different emphasis from the viewpoints on the Leigh Coastal Path, where the named destinations in the surrounding area are the focus.

Culture in Leigh

Historical photographs of the surrounding area are displayed at Leigh Library. The images on display may change; if particular subjects are important to your visit, check in advance what is currently on view. This lets you plan the library as a separate stop to see historical photographs of the area.

The interdenominational St Michaels and All Angels Church in Leigh welcomes visitors. If you are interested in churches and local culture, you can make it a separate focus alongside the walking trails and seascapes. Leigh Sawmill announces gig nights. If live music is important to your stay, check the dates before you travel.

Harbour and boat ramp

Leigh Harbour has a concrete boat ramp for trailer boats up to six metres long. The ramp is unsuitable at low tide. When planning to use the ramp, both boat length and tide level are therefore important. The ramp is also the starting point for the Leigh Harbour Walkway; the low-tide restriction applies to use of the ramp.
