Devonport combines a short ferry ride with distinctive traces of volcanic geology and a layered local history. At Maungauika, an ancient volcanic cone meets military installations; Torpedo Bay is home to a historic site and the official museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy. There are also late Victorian and Edwardian houses, a local museum and routes with different themes. When planning, it’s worth considering whether to focus on geology and archaeological traces, military and local history, or a walking or cycling route.

Getting there by ferry and practical information

The ferry from Downtown Ferry Terminal reaches Devonport in 12 minutes; the ride is scenic. Check the Auckland Transport timetable before setting out. If you plan to park at Maungauika, there is a visitor car park at the foot of the volcanic cone, as well as plenty of on-street parking nearby. As parking availability can change, check conditions before your visit.

Volcanic geology and coastal traces

Maungauika is one of Auckland’s oldest volcanic cones, with coastal platforms and scoria deposits. Also known as North Head, it is crisscrossed by military tunnels, interconnected bunkers and empty gun emplacements. Geology and military history are distinct themes rooted in the same place.

Takarunga offers coastal views, as well as remnants of pā terraces and storage pits. In contrast, Maungauika is defined by its volcanic cone and military structures, while Takarunga brings together coastal views and archaeological traces.

Museums and historic sites

The Devonport Museum focuses on the history and memorabilia of Devonport. Torpedo Bay Navy Museum is the official museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The Torpedo Bay site also tells a story of the area’s history: it is one of the best-preserved examples of a 19th-century mining site in New Zealand, and possibly in the entire southern hemisphere.

Devonport’s Victoria Theatre is a Category 1 historic place; access is private. The Esplanade Hotel is also part of the area’s history: its connection with recreation and tourism in Devonport dates back more than 80 years. Together, these places illustrate different historical connections, though they do not all offer the same opportunities for visitors.

Choose a route by theme

The “Devonport Heritage – Cheltenham to Fort Takapuna” walk starts at Torpedo Bay and passes late Victorian and Edwardian houses. Its route extends beyond Devonport. For a different cultural perspective, the Devonport Arts Festival’s Residential Art Trail is a self-guided route through Devonport Village and around Cheltenham Beach and Vauxhall Shops, following 22 public murals. The trail and festival programme may change.

The Green Route from Devonport to Takapuna takes approximately 40 minutes by bicycle. It follows paths, boardwalks and bridges through parks, mangroves and streets shaped by historic heritage. The routes therefore have different focuses: architecture and older houses on the walk, public art on the Residential Art Trail, and a cycling route through parks and mangroves on the Green Route.
