Nouméa offers more than one way to experience the city: the Musée de la Ville takes visitors through the history of the city and New Caledonia, trails around Ouémo bring the mangrove to life, and the Moselle Market offers a glimpse of local produce and a variety of cuisines. When planning your stay, you can match these different interests with the relevant opening hours and time information.

City History and Biodiversity

At the Musée de la Ville, the story of Nouméa and New Caledonia spans from 1853 to the present day. The Maison de la biodiversité focuses on something different: the city’s ecosystems and local biodiversity. It is open to everyone from Tuesday to Saturday. Exhibitions, events and a virtual tour introduce, among other things, the Ouémo mangrove ecosystem. Visitors can also experience the biodiversity of Nouméa’s coastline on a computer and with virtual reality headsets. Check the latest opening days and program before your visit.

For an in-person experience, guided tours with a botanist or ornithologist are held on the last Sunday of the month. They take place at the Maison de la biodiversité, in the Ouémo mangrove and in Parc urbain de Sainte-Marie. As the program may change, it is worth checking the announced dates in advance. Events are also held throughout the year at Place des Cocotiers; individual program items vary.

Market Visit and Local Cuisine

The Moselle Market in Port-Moselle is open Tuesday to Sunday from 5 a.m. to noon. It is also open on public holiday Mondays and on the last two Mondays in December. Check the latest schedule before your visit, as opening hours may change. More than 130 permanent vendors and around 40 daily vendors welcome visitors there; numbers and product selection may change over time.

The selection includes fruit and vegetables, flowers, charcuterie, spices, bread and pastries, chocolate, olives and olive products, as well as crêpes. Local and Asian culinary specialties are also available. The market is especially busy on weekends and public holidays, when Oceanian music can be heard. Depending on the day of the week and your interests, you can fit a market visit into your stay in different ways, without expecting any particular shopping experience.

Trails by the Water and in Green Spaces

The Ouémo mangrove is a preserved ecosystem that visitors can explore along a trail accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. The trail connects Parc urbain de Sainte-Marie with the Ouémo sports area. In Sainte-Marie, the Maison de la biodiversité adds to the exploration of the mangrove ecosystem: alongside exhibitions and events, it also offers a virtual tour. You can explore the subject through both an urban attraction and the accessible trail.

The Promenade Pierre-Vernier offers a variety of ways to exercise. Its shaded walking path has a natural surface and is intended for walkers, hikers and joggers. There is also a cycle path for bicycles, scooters, skateboards and roller skates. Along the promenade are four separate workout areas, all open to everyone. These paths and areas let you choose the kind of activity that suits your plans; no walking time is provided for the promenade.

If you would like to include an excursion with a specific time estimate in your plans, the second circuit through Vallée-du-Tir is 2.5 kilometers long and takes about an hour and a half. Another activity with a set time is feeding the kagu in the Grande Terre aviary. You can watch it Wednesday to Sunday at 10 a.m.; the published schedule may change, so it is a good idea to check before your visit.
