Benedeneind lies on the river levee on the north side of the Oijense Polder. In the surrounding area, river nature, historic dikes and field patterns, walking options and regional cuisine appeal to a range of interests. You can plan a trip around wildlife watching, exercise or culture: alongside traces and views of the Maas, there is a viewing point, a castle with historical context and beer offerings available on request.
Dikes, fields and architectural history
The western, winding section of the Oijense Benedendijk largely corresponds to its condition around 1800. A historic pattern of small plots has been preserved in the southwestern part of Benedeneind. Near Benedeneind, Kasteel van Oijen is the forecourt of a former castle; the building has two low, round corner towers dating from the 16th century. These features bring the cultural landscape to life on different levels: as a route, as a small-scale field pattern and as architectural history. The historical reference points differ: the dike section is compared with its condition around 1800, while the towers date from the 16th century. You can therefore explore historic landscape features and architecture as distinct aspects of the area.
River nature and wildlife watching
The Hemelrijkse Waard in Oijen, municipality of Oss, combines river nature, flood protection and water quality. In the vicinity of Benedeneind, visitors can explore the Waard, look for birds and animal tracks, and enjoy the expansive views along the banks of the Maas. The river views and tracking offer different focuses: the view stretches far across the banks, while tracks left by badgers and deer can be found in the clay. You may also spot a hare there. The beaver, Europe's largest rodent, has found a permanent habitat in the Hemelrijkse Waard. Those who enjoy looking out for animals will find both identifiable tracks and the chance of a sighting here.
Walks with different destinations
If you want a route that leads into the village, the Dijkwandeling Megen–Oijen via Gelderland follows the Oijense Benedendijk into the village. You can extend a walk by more than three kilometres to reach the observation tower, which offers views across the Hemelrijkse Waard. The village and the viewing point therefore provide different reference points for planning your walk. As route details may change, check the route information before setting out. Allow for additional walking time if you take the extension.
Beer and Brabant cuisine
Near Benedeneind, you can discover regional beers and the hearty Brabant cuisine of Brabant at Bierbrouwerij Oijen. This adds a culinary note to the area's nature and culture. A brewery explanation or beer tasting is available there on request. Check availability before travelling if you plan to take up one of these offers.
