In Beers, you can choose between architectural history, hiking and cycling. H. Lambertuskerk tells the story of a long parish history; the flat landscape of the Beerse Overlaat invites you to hike, cycle or picnic. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different themes and route lengths, from birdwatching to trails starting at a historic country estate.

Church and Historic Country Estates

The parish of H. Lambertus was first mentioned in 1308. The oldest part of today’s church is a tower dating from the 15th century. The present-day H. Lambertuskerk was built in 1890 as a Neo-Gothic, three-aisled cruciform church, based on a design by C. Franssen. The church’s architectural history thus brings together the older tower and the late-19th-century church building.

Ossenbroek is a historic country estate dating from the 18th century and is protected by the state as a protected historic complex comprising various elements. There is a clear restriction for visitors: the house and its immediate surroundings are not accessible for reasons of privacy. However, the house is clearly visible from the public road. De Tienmorgen is also a protected historic site: its listed farm complex was fully restored in 2010. Children can meet the farm animals there; they can mingle with them, pet them and play. Rabbits are kept in a petting corner.

Walking Through the Landscape

De Beerse Overlaat is a former lowered section of the Meuse dike near the village of Beers. The flat landscape is ideal for hiking, cycling or picnicking. For a walk through the surrounding countryside, you can choose the 10-kilometre route “Explore the Countryside Around Beers” (“Ontdek het buitengebied van Beers”). “Birdwatching” (“Vogels spotten”) offers a different focus: this 8-kilometre walking route is for birdwatching at the nature lake of the Kraaijenbergse Plassen.

If you are looking for shorter routes, there are several walks of between 3 and 5 kilometres starting from Landgoed de Barendonk. The estate itself is a historic private country estate and a place of interest. The three route options therefore differ mainly in their stated length and purpose: exploring the surrounding countryside, watching birds or choosing a shorter walk starting from Landgoed de Barendonk.

Cycling Routes and Activities on the Water

Several cycling and walking routes start at Natuurpoort De Bungelaer. One named cycling route starts at Natuurpoort De Bungelaer, De Bungelaar 4 in Beers: “Natuurpoort De Bungelaer: Discover Maasheggen UNESCO” (“Natuurpoort De Bungelaer: Ontdek Maasheggen UNESCO”). This gives you a choice of different route themes for cycling or walking days, without needing to combine the named routes into a single tour.

Activities at the Kraaijenbergse Plassen are another option: Ceulemans is located by the lakes near the village of Beers and offers, among other things, sailing with boat rental, canoeing and raft building. In the heart of Beers, ’t Wapen van Beers is a village café with a terrace and large garden. It makes a suitable stop for cyclists and walkers. You can therefore choose your itinerary based on architectural history, a specific walking distance, birdwatching or activities on the water.
