Tušina brings together cultural history and rural hosts’ offerings centered on water, fruit and tea. Two cultural sites provide different focal points for a stay: the Novice-Cerović House is in Tušina, while Podmalinsko Monastery is three kilometers from the village. You can plan visits to the memorial site, monastery and nature activities according to your interests; arrange organized host activities in advance.
Cultural Sites in Tušina
The Novice-Cerović House is a memorial museum in Tušina dating from the 19th century. It preserves a fully intact room interior, as well as decorations and medals associated with Montenegro’s first honorary ban. The house is next to the Boan–Šavnik road, near the Church of St. George. Its location by the road provides a clear landmark, while the preserved interior and memorabilia also shape the history of the house.
Podmalinsko Monastery is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. According to tradition, it was founded around 1252 by King Uroš I; restoration work has been underway since 1998. The grave of Mirko Aleksić, a prominent hero of the Drobnjak, is in the churchyard. The monastery’s history thus combines a religious dedication and a traditional account of its founding with a specific place of remembrance.
Host Activities, Water and Regional Products
Hosts in Tušina can show visitors hidden waterfalls and natural pools. The Tušina household can also organize a trip to a nearby pond, where freshly caught fish is prepared together. Make arrangements for these activities before your trip. Swimming in the Bukovica is another option; local conditions may vary.
The Ćirović household makes homemade rakija, juices, preserves and liqueurs from fruit grown on its own property. Tea is available at a different time of year: harvested tea is dried and offered to guests for tasting in summer. If tasting the tea is important to you, check availability in advance. This lets you distinguish between the described fruit production and the seasonal tea offering when planning your visit.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
The Virak–Tušina road section is part of the R-5 corridor, which connects Nikšić, Šavnik, Tušinja and Žabljak. Check current road conditions before setting out. The cultural sites’ road connections provide different landmarks: the Novice-Cerović House is on the Boan–Šavnik road, while Podmalinsko is three kilometers from Tušina.
Šavnik as a Wider Travel Destination
The Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park lies in the far northwest of the municipality of Šavnik and covers 2,994 hectares. The Dragišnica forest complex is within the park, on the southern slopes of Durmitor. Skakavica is also in Šavnik: this seasonal waterfall is about 80 meters high and becomes active during snowmelt and heavy rain.
The Nevidio Canyon was first traversed in its entirety in 1965. Today it is considered a destination for adventure tourism; narrow passages, high rock walls, clear water and natural pools define its character. The marked mountain trail to Boljske Grede presents a different challenge: it is demanding and technically difficult, and is suitable only for visitors in good physical condition. Skakavica is therefore defined mainly by its seasonal flow, while the physical and technical demands of Boljske Grede are key considerations when choosing a route.
