Pljevlja combines religious and archaeological history with marked trails through the landscape. This gives you different options when planning your trip: buildings and collections, traces of ancient settlement, or outdoor activities. A look at the individual sites and their features can help you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Religious Buildings and History
The Husein-Pašina Mosque was built in 1569 to designs by the architect Hajrudin, who also built the famous bridge in Mostar. The mosque preserves a 16th-century Quran, written in Arabic script and decorated with gilded miniatures. Its architectural history and collection of books make it a special stop for travelers interested in religious architecture and historical manuscripts.
Several monasteries also offer different historical perspectives. The Church of St. Nicholas at Dubočica Monastery was built and painted in 1565. The earliest known written mention of Sveta Trojica Monastery dates from 1537. Its treasury contains icons, liturgical objects, goldsmiths’ work, church embroidery, furniture and documents. The monastery was an important religious, educational, cultural and national center for the Orthodox population of Stara Raška, Polimlje and Potarje. Dovolja Monastery is first mentioned in 1513; this is taken to indicate that it was built as early as the 15th century.
The Pljevlja Local History Museum was founded in 1952 and holds nearly 5,000 museum objects. Its collections make it possible to trace human settlement in the Pljevlja area almost continuously back to more than 40,000 years ago. The archaeological site of Municipium S. in Komini near Pljevlja offers another way to explore the past: it comprises the remains of an ancient city and two necropolises.
A monument was erected on StraĹľica in 1961. It is dedicated to those killed in the Battle of Pljevlja, fallen fighters from the municipality of Pljevlja, and unknown fighters from various parts of Yugoslavia who fell in the municipality during the National Liberation War.
Ljubišnja and Outdoor Trails
The landscape also offers specific landmarks: at 2,238 meters, Dernjačište is the highest peak of Ljubišnja. Around a hundred bird species live on the mountain, including the honey buzzard, capercaillie, hazel grouse, stock dove, great spotted woodpecker and golden eagle. These details give an impression of the variety of birdlife mentioned there, but do not guarantee that any particular species will be seen on a single visit.
Ljubišnja is fully marked for hiking and mountain biking. In the rural area of Pljevlja, 11 marked cycling routes are also designated, with a total length of 270 kilometers. Hiking in Pljevlja also includes the Tara Canyon. Vodice City Park has marked fitness, walking and cycling trails, two artificial lakes and a fishpond. You can therefore choose according to the activity you want: hiking and mountain biking, cycling on designated routes, or a walk in the city park.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
If you are mainly interested in cultural history, the museum, monasteries and archaeological site offer different points of interest; the Ljubišnja, cycling routes and hiking options are separate choices for outdoor activities. If your time is limited, it helps to decide first which theme matters most to you. If you want to explore several sides of Pljevlja, choose sites and activities based on your interests rather than assuming a fixed itinerary.
This way, your choice of accommodation stays aligned with your planned trip. Discover more destinations: Pljevlja, Ĺ ljuke, Tivat, Andrijevica, Ulcinj, Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, RoĹľaje.
