Mrtvica Canyon: Bridge, Water and Hiking Trail

At Zeleni vir in Mrtvica Canyon near Sela stands a stone bridge dating from 1858. The water of the Ibrištica also has a long history of use: for centuries, it served a monastery mill and a fulling mill. These are two distinct connections to water in the area—a historic structure at the canyon and the Ibrištica’s traditional role in powering mills. Another natural feature near Sela is the 48-metre-high waterfall formed by the Svetigora stream.

The hiking trail through Mrtvica Canyon is considered moderately difficult. This rating provides an initial guide when choosing a route; conditions may vary by season. The road to the canyon branches off in the direction of the village of Međuriječje. Check road conditions before travelling, as they can change.

Morača Monastery and Cultural Heritage

Morača Monastery, a medieval Orthodox monastery built in 1252, is also located near Sela. Visitors can tour the monastery. Its elaborate frescoes include a work that won an award for the most beautiful fresco in the Byzantine style at an international exhibition in Paris. The construction date and the award highlight different aspects: one places the monastery’s construction in its historical context, while the other singles out a particular work of art.

Population figures also offer a snapshot of the area at a particular time. A local report from 2024 cited around 25 residents in winter and up to 100 people in summer. These seasonal figures are not a current census.
