Lipci lies on the north shore of the Bay of Kotor between Risan and Morinj, on the main road that follows the coast. A marked uphill path leads to the rock drawings at Stijena Lipci; there are also paths by the water and maritime infrastructure. For planning your visit, the main points of interest are the archaeological site, a coastal walk, and travel via Risan.
Rock Drawings and Early History
The rock face at Stijena Lipci depicts deer, horses, geometric shapes, and stylized human figures. The rock drawings are described as the oldest of their kind in Montenegro. They are considered evidence that the Bay of Kotor was already inhabited in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, around 3000 BC. The site of the prehistoric drawings is classified as a Category II archaeological cultural monument. Specific image motifs are thus linked to a settlement history stretching far back in time: the depictions give visitors something tangible to see, while their dating points to the bay’s early settlement.
A marked path climbs uphill from the roadside parking area to Stijena Lipci; the ascent takes about ten minutes. Information boards provide context and explanations on site. When you arrive, check whether the boards are accessible, and ask about the current condition of the path. The Lipci–Selo Ubli mountain route is a separate trail, rated as moderate. Ask locally about its current condition.
Coastal Paths and Water
The coastal path from Lipci to Morinj takes about 30 minutes on foot; the actual walking time depends on conditions. The path passes through shaded stretches with olive and fig trees. The two walking routes described differ in duration and destination: the roughly ten-minute climb leads to the rock art site, while the longer coastal path goes to Morinj.
The water at Lipci Beach is usually calm because the bay is sheltered; water conditions may vary seasonally. There are opportunities for sea kayaking along the coast between Risan and Morinj, below the Lipci rock art cliffs. Activities and providers may vary by season; check whether the activity is available during your travel dates. The Roman Mosaics in Risan are another nearby cultural attraction to consider. They are open to visitors; allow about 30 minutes to explore. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Lipci is on the main road that runs along the north shore of the Bay of Kotor. A roundabout in Lipci connects to the road heading north toward Nikšić, Žabljak, and Durmitor. The Kotor–Herceg Novi bus route stops in Risan; from there, it is about a 20-minute walk along the coastal road to Lipci. Check current timetables and allow for the walk when planning your journey. Lipci’s maritime infrastructure includes a landing pier and a shared mooring facility for boats.
Montenegro’s Wider Cultural Context
In Montenegro’s wider cultural context, the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor lies in the Bay of Kotor on the Adriatic coast. It includes fortified and open towns, settlements, palaces and monastic ensembles, as well as a cultivated terraced landscape. It also bears witness to the spread of Mediterranean cultures in the Balkans. This regional perspective adds another cultural context to the history of the rock drawings without conflating the different scales of Lipci and the Kotor region.
