Motički Gaj can be explored through its place names: a local tradition links the name of the place to a story about Toma Vuković. Priporac is a steep slope within Motički Gaj. Smrdan, in turn, is a spring in the area; its name comes from a plant with sword-shaped leaves. Here, tradition, terrain, and plants stand side by side as distinct local themes. For travelers who enjoy taking a closer look at a place’s names, this offers a tangible way to discover Motički Gaj.

Place Names as a Local Point of Entry

The three names refer to different things: the story concerns the name Motički Gaj, Priporac denotes the steep slope, and Smrdan is a spring with a plant-related name. This makes local toponymy a small field of discovery in its own right. You can read the names as clues to tradition and landscape without treating the slope, the spring, and the story as part of a single connection.

For nature and cultural themes at a broader regional level, Žabljak is the wider destination. The following lakes, trails, and cultural sites belong to this context and should be distinguished from the local place-name themes in Motički Gaj.

Lakes and Water in the Wider Destination of Žabljak

Durmitor National Park is home to 18 glacial lakes; Black Lake is the largest and best known. It lies 3 km southwest of Žabljak at an elevation of 1,418 m, is the largest lake in the national park, and is Montenegro’s second-largest mountain lake. It is also protected by UNESCO. One distinctive hydrological feature is that its water flows underground into the Tara and Piva rivers.

Vražje Lake is also part of Durmitor National Park and lies within the municipality of Žabljak. It is a glacial lake with crystal-clear water. Zminje Lake is in the Pitomine district within the municipality of Žabljak. The 2.6 km-long Mlinsko Stream connects it to Veliko Crno jezero, which lies 100 m lower. These are different kinds of water-related connections: at Zminje Lake, the stream describes a hydrological link, while a separate footpath connects Black Lake and Zminje Lake.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

Black Lake is the starting point for several marked hiking and walking trails. A constructed footpath also leads from there to Zminje Lake. The access road to Jablan Lake extends as far as the Momčilov grad restaurant; from there, a gently uphill footpath runs through a pine forest. This trail is suitable for people seeking relaxation and for families with children. The details therefore vary by destination and trail type: a constructed path between two lakes, several marked trails starting at Black Lake, and access to Jablan Lake via a road followed by an uphill walk.

In the wider Žabljak area, the Savin Kuk Ski Center offers 4.6 km of ski runs, including blue, red, and black runs, as well as beginner terrain. Durmitor National Park also offers opportunities for cross-country skiing, ski touring, and snowshoeing. These activities are seasonal, and operating conditions at the ski facilities may also change. If winter sports are important to your trip, check the latest operating information in advance.

Cultural Heritage and Summer in Žabljak

Žabljak’s registered religious heritage includes single-nave stone churches with bell towers on their façades. They date from the first half or the end of the 19th century. In Novakovići, near Riblje Lake, there are UNESCO-protected medieval tombstones known as Stećci. The cultural heritage therefore includes both church architecture and protected tombstones at a specifically named location.

The Wild Beauty Art Festival is a multidisciplinary arts event held every summer in Žabljak. The Durmitor Ring is also a designated route for planning a scenic drive: signs mark the panoramic road in both directions. The seasonal event and the signed road add culture and touring to the lake and trail themes, without equating them with Motički Gaj’s local place names.
