Bijelo Polje lies in the Lim Valley and borders Serbia. When planning your trip, the town’s history, local culture and excursions in the surrounding area all offer different possibilities. The JU Muzej Bijelo Polje brings together several collection areas, while historic buildings provide insight into different periods. Springs, Bjelasica and a cave broaden the perspective on the landscape. First decide whether you are more interested in cultural history, regional excursions or a combination of both.
Museum and Architectural History
The JU Muzej Bijelo Polje was founded on 31 January 1957. Its collections cover archaeology, ethnography, history, numismatics and art history. The museum building is designated a cultural property and was built between 1897 and 1905 as a secular Turkish Ruždija school. The construction period therefore describes the building’s former use, while the founding date relates to the museum’s history. With five clearly distinct subject areas, the collection offers a broad thematic scope.
Other buildings also provide specific historical reference points. In 1741, the Gradska džamija was moved stone by stone from the Ljuboviđa Valley to the town of Bijelo Polje. A stone bridge over the Bistrica near Bijelo Polje dates from the late 17th century. The bridge is therefore the older structure; the mosque represents a later change to the town, when it was moved there from the valley.
Springs, Scenery and Excursions
Banje Selo is one of the best-known mineral springs in Bijelo Polje. The spring lies at the foot of the village of the same name, in the Lješnica Valley. Kisjele Vode is another excursion destination in Bijelo Polje. At Banje Selo, the spring and its location are the main points of interest; Kisjele Vode offers a separate reason to visit. This makes it possible to include different interests in scenery and regional destinations in your travel plans.
Nearby, Bjelasica is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. In the wider region, the mountain range lies between the Lim and Tara rivers. If you want to include outdoor activities in your trip, consider hiking and mountain biking as different ways to explore Bjelasica. Novakovića Cave is 28 kilometres from Bijelo Polje. A three-kilometre footpath through the Vranštica River canyon leads to the cave. The two figures describe different things: 28 kilometres is the cave’s distance from Bijelo Polje, while three kilometres is the length of the footpath through the canyon. Check current access and trail conditions before planning your visit.
Local Culture and Event Dates
The Bjelopoljski Bazar focuses on local cuisine, traditional crafts, old trades and folk handicrafts. Its themes range from culinary interests to traditional skills. If you would like to include the bazaar in your trip, check the latest dates.
Ratković's Poetry Evening has been held in Bijelo Polje since 1970. It complements the history of the buildings and collections with a literary tradition anchored to a specific date. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the latest event dates beforehand.
