The wider Bar destination

The Bar area lies between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. The municipality’s tourist offerings include boat trips on Lake Skadar, visits to Old Bar and the Old Olive Tree of Mirovica, as well as diving, sailing and other sports. For regional orientation, there is also the 115 km-long “Between Two Magical Shores” panoramic route, with seven viewpoints.

On Lake Skadar, licensed operators organize boat trips; boats depart from places including Virpazar. In Lake Skadar National Park, visitors can explore nine marked hiking trails independently using a map. Maps are available at the visitor centers in Virpazar and Vranjina. The park also has five cycling trails and two mountain biking routes; the cycling trails start in places including Virpazar. Birdwatching can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower, with at least one day’s advance notice. Preparation therefore varies by activity: birdwatching requires advance notice, while the marked hiking trails can be explored independently with a map.

Cultural Monuments and History

There are 32 registered and categorized immovable cultural monuments in the municipality of Bar. Cultural institutions include the Bar Local History Museum, with Stari Grad Fortress, and Besac Fortress above Virpazar. Besac stands on a hill above the town and offers views of Lake Skadar. King Nikola’s Palace is another regional historical site: King Nikola had it built directly on the seafront in 1885. The palace’s local history museum houses the most important archaeological finds from this area.

Other historical landmarks can be found around Lake Skadar and across the municipality. The Old Well of Ostros is 12 meters deep and was built in 1001, in the 11th century. Starčevo Monastery is on Starčevo Island in Lake Skadar. The Old Olive Tree in Mirovica is one of the natural monuments in the municipality of Bar. These examples offer different ways to explore regional history: from a structure with a precise date to a monastery on an island in the lake and a tree listed as a natural monument.

Landscape and regional orientation

For a different perspective on the Bar destination, there is Murićka Beach: it has visitor facilities and restaurants serving food from the Lake Skadar area. Transport connections should also be considered at the municipal level. Three major highways run through the municipality of Bar, including the Ulcinj–Bar–Budva connection and the Bar–Petrovac–Virpazar–Podgorica connection.
