The beach of Žukotrlica, associated with Šušanj, combines a pebble beach with an adjoining pine forest. This means the pebbly shoreline and natural shade from the pines meet along the same stretch of beach. This is a clear focus when choosing where to stay: Šušanj suits a trip planned around the beach and its surroundings.

Beach, facilities and activities

The beach area has sun loungers and parasols, changing rooms, showers and parking. Cafés and restaurants are nearby. Facilities and services may change seasonally or depending on the operator. If a particular service is important to your plans, it is a good idea to check in advance what you can expect.

Beach activities include volleyball and jet ski rentals. Availability depends on the season and the provider. If you want to plan for one of these activities specifically, it is best to check in advance.

Getting to Žukotrlica

The beach is accessible by car or by regular bus services. Check bus schedules separately before your trip. If you are driving, you can take the available parking in the beach area into account. These are the two stated ways to get there; which one suits your itinerary depends on your own plans.

The žuka tradition in Šušanj–Žukotrlica

Another facet of the area is the traditional processing of žuka fibers. In the past, the fibers were used to make woven and practical items: nets, baskets, ropes, bags, clothing and shoes. This craft history offers a cultural perspective on Šušanj–Žukotrlica alongside its beach appeal. It should be understood as a historical tradition, not as an indication of a visitor attraction that is continuously operating.

Bar as the wider destination: lake and trails

The wider destination of Bar offers further landscapes to explore. The Bar area lies between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. Licensed operators organize boat trips on the lake; boats depart from places including Virpazar. Lake Skadar is therefore a distinct focus alongside the beach in Šušanj.

There are nine marked hiking trails in Lake Skadar National Park that visitors can follow independently using a map. Maps are available at the visitor centers in Virpazar and Vranjina. There are also five cycling routes and two mountain biking trails; some of the cycling routes start in Virpazar. Birdwatching on Lake Skadar can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower. Booking at least one day in advance is required.

Culture and history in the wider destination of Bar

The cultural attractions in the wider destination of Bar also encompass a variety of places and stories. King Nikola’s Palace was built by King Nikola in 1885, directly on the seafront. The local history museum in the palace houses the most important archaeological finds from the area. The Old Olive Tree in Mirovica is one of the natural monuments in the Municipality of Bar.

Besac Fortress stands on a hill above Virpazar and offers views of Lake Skadar. In Ostros, the Old Well is 12 meters deep; it was built in 1001, in the 11th century. Starčevo Monastery is also one of the historic sites in the wider destination of Bar and is located on Starčevo Island in Lake Skadar.
