Limljani can be explored through its cultural heritage and landscape: the “Between Two Magical Shores” panoramic route passes through the village and connects the Adriatic coast with Lake Skadar. Limljani is an important stop along this route. From the Limljani Viewpoint, you can look out over the Crmnica Field and the mountain ranges around the municipality of Bar. Together with St. Thomas Church and traces of the former railway, these features create a picture of the village where viewpoints, architectural heritage and history sit alongside specific routes.
The church and railway as historical landmarks
The story of St. Thomas Church is unusually specific: during the 1896 earthquake, it slid almost 100 metres and remained undamaged. The church is considered a tourist attraction and is connected to the Cultural Heritage Panoramic Route. Together, the account of this event and the church’s place on the route make it a distinct cultural attraction in Limljani.
The railway is also part of the village’s history. The former station building stands in Limljani beside the old railway line between Bar and Virpazar. The former Bar–Virpazar railway was the first railway built by the state of Montenegro. The Ćiro train ran through Limljani until 1959. Together, these details provide a concrete framework for the village’s railway heritage, from the former station building to the final year trains ran through Limljani.
Traditional architecture and local cuisine
Limljani’s traditional architecture includes stone houses with vaulted features, threshing floors, dry-stone walls and hillside terraces. This encompasses everything from features of individual houses to walls and terraces throughout the village. Those interested in architectural heritage will find several distinct forms here, rather than just a single building type.
The Klisić winery is associated with Limljani. Local food traditions include cheese with mountain herbs, homemade pršut, olives, dried and fresh figs, pomegranates, mandarins and walnuts. The selection ranges from savoury products to fruit and nuts, adding a culinary perspective to Limljani’s history.
Cycling route and regional activities
The Virpazar–Limljani–Boljevići–Virpazar cycling route covers 20 kilometres and includes 375 metres of ascent. Distance and ascent are two separate points of reference for planning; route conditions may vary.
The wider destination of Bar lies between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. Lake Skadar National Park has nine marked hiking trails that visitors can follow independently using a map. Maps are available at the visitor centres in Virpazar and Vranjina. The park also has five cycling routes and two mountain bike trails; some of the cycling routes start in Virpazar. These are regional activities in the destination of Bar, while the 20-kilometre route is a separate route through Limljani.
Licensed operators organise boat trips on Lake Skadar; boats depart from places including Virpazar. Birdwatching on Lake Skadar can be organised from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower, with at least one day’s advance booking. Advance booking is a specific point to bear in mind when planning birdwatching; boat trips are organised by licensed operators.
