Bar combines a palace complex near the waterfront and historic sites with markets, sailing and excursions in the wider area around Lake Skadar. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus mainly on cultural sites in Bar, coastal activities or attractions in the wider Bar destination area.
King Nikola’s Palace Complex and the Old Town
The Zavičajni Museum Bar is housed in King Nikola’s 1885 summer residence, by the waterfront promenade in Topolica. King Nikola’s palace complex is protected as an immovable cultural asset, Category II. It includes a small palace, a court chapel and a winter garden. The complex also includes a park with rare trees and exotic Mediterranean vegetation. Bar’s cultural and historical sites therefore encompass both architecture and garden spaces.
Stari Bar offers a different perspective on history: visitors can stroll among the ruins and see restored palaces, churches, an aqueduct and a Turkish bath. The fortress is divided into Lower Town, Middle Town and Upper Town. The Old Town of Bar preserves the remains of more than 260 former buildings. These features make Stari Bar a clear focus for travelers interested in historic architecture.
The Adriatic, the Marina and Lake Skadar
Bar offers access to experiences on the Adriatic and at Lake Skadar. Options mentioned include trips on Lake Skadar, diving and sailing, as well as the 115-kilometer panoramic route “Between Two Magical Shores,” with seven viewpoints. Visits to Stari Bar and the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica are also among the options. A city beach is located near the Port of Bar; specific beach conditions may vary.
The Marina Bar is also a useful landmark for sailing trips. It is located at the entrance to the Adriatic and has 660 berths for vessels up to 45 meters long. The marina offers engine maintenance, engine repairs and boat cleaning. Confirm the published capacity before booking, and check the availability of these services directly before you arrive.
The wider Bar destination area also includes activities in Lake Skadar National Park. There are nine marked hiking trails that visitors can explore independently with a map; maps are available at the visitor centers in Virpazar and Vranjina. The park has five cycling trails and two mountain biking routes; cycling trails start in Virpazar, among other places. Licensed operators organize boat trips on the lake, with boats departing from Virpazar, among other places. Birdwatching trips can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower, with at least one day’s notice. These activities are part of the wider Bar destination area and should not be confused with places in the city itself.
Olives, Markets and Regional Cuisine
Near Bar stands the Old Olive Tree of Mirovica, a protected natural monument. It is estimated to be more than 2,200 years old; it belongs to the žutica variety and produces olive oil. Žutica is also a local olive variety associated with Bar. Barsko zlato is a local olive oil brand associated with Bar. The city’s culinary identity also includes fish and wines from Crmnica and the Skadar Basin.
Bar has two markets: an older one in the city center and a newer Bar market near the bus station. The stalls sell homemade olive oil, olives, mandarins, pomegranates and dried figs. The selection is seasonal and may change; the location and layout of the markets may also change over time. If visiting a market is important to your plans, check the latest details in advance.
When choosing a hotel in Bar, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: the palace complex and Stari Bar, coastal activities or a focus on the wider area around Lake Skadar.
