At 4,021 metres, Otgontenger is a prominent landmark in Zavkhan Province. The mountain lies in the sums of Aldarkhaan and Otgon in Zavkhan Province. The strictly protected Otgontenger area covers 102,000 hectares in the sum of Otgon alone. Its boundaries were redrawn in 2019 to preserve the natural balance and original state and to promote nature tourism. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the mountain, the protected area and the cultural sites, as each is a different starting point when looking for accommodation.
Mountains, Lakes and Landscapes
Lake Ulaagchinii Khar is about 30 kilometres long, 5 to 10 kilometres wide and 48 to 54 metres deep. Sand dunes and springs bound it to the north; the southern shore is characterised by reed beds and Mount Tovkhosh. The lake is 80 kilometres northeast of the centre of Erdenekhairkhan sum and 110 kilometres from the provincial centre of Zavkhan. These details help you locate the lake before choosing accommodation as a base.
There are also specific landmarks around Telmen. Lake Angirt is 20 kilometres northwest of the centre of Telmen sum. The sand dunes of Doloon Tovgor are 20 kilometres from the centre of Telmen sum, near Mount Tsetserlegmandal. A cold spring that does not freeze in winter rises there. The Gozgoryn Bel deer stone complex is in the Bayan-Ayrag area, 35 kilometres north of the sum centre of Telmen, and includes more than ten deer stones. Lakes, dunes and archaeological monuments can therefore be considered as distinct points of interest when planning a trip.
City History and Archaeological Finds
Opened in 2025, the Uliastai History Hall presents the city’s history in five periods: from old Uliastai through the Manchu period and the Bogd Khanate of Mongolia to the Mongolian People’s Republic and modern Uliastai. Exhibition details may change, so check the current opening hours and exhibits before visiting. The Zavkhan Province Museum was founded in 1924 and displays more than 10,500 objects in 18 halls.
An archaeological hall at the Zavkhan Province Museum of Regional Studies contains more than 100 valuable exhibits. These include finds from Yamaan-Us dating from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE; check the current exhibition before visiting. A Xiongnu aristocratic burial complex was also discovered at Yamaan-Us in Aldarkhaan sum. These two details show different aspects of regional archaeology: finds displayed in a museum hall and a discovery at a named site.
The tradition surrounding Otgontenger is also part of the region’s history: according to tradition, the mountain has been venerated since the 6th century. This veneration was revived in 1779 and later continued as part of Buddhist rites. A traditional story also connects Lake Telmen, on the border of Nömrög and Telmen sums, with Lake Oigon in Tüdevtei sum. It tells that both lakes formed from waters that flowed northeast from the area of what is now the Zagastai-Bulnai Mountains.
Choose Accommodation Near the Places You Want to Visit
When looking for a holiday rental or other accommodation, it helps to decide on your main focus first: Uliastai for city history, the places around Telmen for lakes, dunes and deer stones, or Aldarkhaan and Otgon for access to Otgontenger and Yamaan-Us. The distances given are measured from specific sum centres or the provincial centre; use them as a guide and check the exact route separately. For a museum visit, it is also worth checking opening hours and the current exhibition.
