Bayandelger can be explored through two themes: the nature of the locally protected Gun-Galuut area and the history of Bayandelger soum. The Gun Galuut Nature Conservation Center is located in Bayandelger soum in Töv Province and serves as a research, education and information center for the area. Its responsibilities include monitoring local biodiversity and providing information for schoolchildren, visitors and tourists. If you would like to include the center’s offerings in your trip, check in advance for the latest information.
Gun-Galuut: Landscape and Protected Area
The Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve is a locally protected area established in 2003 by the local parliament of Bayandelger. It covers about 20,000 hectares and is divided into a tourism zone, a limited-use zone and a core zone. High mountains, steppe, rivers, lakes and wetlands shape the landscape. The rocky mountain Baits lies within the protected area; the Kherlen flows through it and is described as one of Mongolia’s longest rivers.
Wetlands and Birdlife
The wetlands of Gun-Galuut are important stopover and breeding sites for migratory birds, particularly the White-naped Crane. Lake Ayaga is considered to have a greater diversity of bird species than Lake Ikh-Gun. The Delberkhii wetland is described as the main water source for both lakes. Together, these details offer insight into the importance of the water bodies and wetlands for the protected area’s birdlife.
The area is reported to have 63 mammal species, 81 bird species, three amphibian species and 38 fish species; at the same time, its fauna and flora have not yet been comprehensively studied. An ecological interview from 2026 reports that four pairs of Tsen-Togoruu come each year to breed at Lake Ayaga and in the Tsengiin Burd wetland. Tsengiin Burd is a wetland where waterbirds and wetland birds lay their eggs.
Local History and Archaeological Traces
The Bayandelger Cultural Center runs a library and a local history museum. The biography of writer D. Natsagdorj is also connected with Bayandelger soum: he was born on November 17, 1906, in GĂĽn Galuutai. A memorial monument was erected at his birthplace in the soum in 1981.
The ruins of Undur Dov lie in Bayandelger soum, between Lake Ikh-Gun and Lake Ayaga. They contain remains of what is believed to be an ancient settlement. The surviving defensive walls are described as measuring 410 Ă— 420 meters, standing 1.5 to 1.2 meters high and measuring 4 to 5 meters thick; there is a gate on each of the four sides. Bayandelger thus offers nature observation and local history as distinct themes to explore on a trip.
