A 3.70-metre-high deer stone monument stands at the Ulaan Tolgoi site in Bag 1 of Alag-Erdene. Numerous smaller deer stone monuments and large khirgisĂĽĂĽrs surround the site. The Alag-Erdene local history room was established in 2006 to mark the 80th anniversary of the sum.

Cultural sites with varied points of interest

Bag 1 also includes the Khöshöötiin devseg deer stone monument and the Shuvuutyn am site. Two deer stone monuments stand there and are described as significant cultural heritage from the time of the Xiongnu Empire. The selection of sites thus includes both individually named monuments and a site with two stones whose historical context is highlighted.

Shiree Khad lies on the shore of Lake Erkhel and has long been revered by the local population. Gal Norov Khad is described as a flame-shaped rock about 2,000 years old; traces of its veneration remain to this day. Bichigt Khad in Bag 2 offers a different point of interest: inscriptions in traditional Mongolian script are carved into the rocks. In this way, traditional reverence, surviving traces and written records appear side by side as distinct cultural themes.

A monument to the military commander Sübeedei Baatar stands at Chandagatiin am in Bag 5. The site is described as Mönkh Khan’s camp. This named historical association adds another cultural point of reference in Alag-Erdene alongside the monuments and inscriptions.

Rock formations and landscape

The landscape sites are also located in different bags. In Bag 2, Barchgar Khad is an unusual rock formation on the summit of Barchgar Mountain. Ekhyn Umai Khad lies along the upper reaches of the Ujigiin Gol. In Bag 3, Yargis Mountain is considered scenic and is home to a rich variety of wild animals and birds. In Bag 5, Elst Mankhan Mountain is known for its distinctive, permanently sand-covered slope. The descriptions therefore range from a summit formation and a river’s upper reaches to wildlife and birds, as well as a sand-covered mountainside.

The national park as a regional setting

Khovsgol National Park includes the territory of Alag-Erdene and four other sums in Khovsgol Aimag; it covers 838,070 hectares. It protects the Lake Khuvsgul catchment and aims to develop nature tourism. Alag-Erdene is also on the travel route of domestic and international visitors who come to see Lake Khuvsgul. Two aspects are therefore relevant when considering the destination: the individual cultural and landscape sites in the sum, and the larger protected area to which Alag-Erdene belongs.

Considering Alag-Erdene when looking for accommodation

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Alag-Erdene, first decide which aspects are most important to you during your stay: deer stone monuments and inscriptions, revered rocks, distinctive landforms, or the national park as a protected area. The places mentioned are located in different bags.
