In the center of Darkhan, the Morin Khuur Complex stands on a hillside beside the road at the roundabout. The “Nairamdalyn Darhan Temdeg” monument and a suspension bridge add to the local cultural attractions: the bridge was part of an orientation tour for newly enrolled students, designed to introduce them to Darkhan’s historical and cultural sights. When planning your trip and accommodation, it is worth distinguishing Darkhan itself from the wider Darkhan-Uul Province, which is home to other distinct natural and cultural sites.

Sights in Darkhan

The Morin Khuur Complex is specifically located in the center, on a hillside and beside the road at the roundabout. The “Nairamdalyn Darhan Temdeg” monument is one of Darhan’s sights. The suspension bridge was part of an orientation tour for newly enrolled students. The tour was intended to introduce participants to Darkhan’s historical and cultural sights.

The wider destination of Darkhan-Uul Province

Darkhan City is the center of Darkhan-Uul Province and is located at the junction of the Ulaanbaatar–Altanbulag international highway and the Ulaanbaatar–Sükhbaatar international railway line. The province is also part of the Orkhon and Selenge river basin region. These regional connections situate the wider destination in terms of both its transport routes and its major river basins.

Sacred mountains and natural sites

Darkhan Mountain lies north of Sharyn Gol Soum and is a sacred local mountain rising to 1,239 meters. Its landscape includes forests, rare wildlife, springs, streams and ovoo shrines. In 2008, the provincial Presidium of the Citizens’ Representative Khural placed the mountain under local protection; regulations for the rituals were also approved.

Buural Mountain is also a sacred local mountain, rising 1,007 meters above sea level. At its foothills, north of the center of Khongor Soum, are 27 tombs dating from the Mongol Empire. Sharyn Tsagaan Lake in Khongor Soum is among the province’s scenic natural sites.

The Love Tree consists of two intertwined trees and is located in the recreational area along the Zulzagan River. Local young people traditionally pray there for a good spouse. Dondov Lama Spring lies between Erkhet Khairkhan Mountain and the Kharaa River, on the south side of Salkhit Bag in Khongor Soum. It was named after Lama Dondov, who, according to tradition, drank from it every day. Its water was traditionally used in summer to make high-quality milk vodka.

Archaeological traces and rock art

At the upper reaches of the Khuiten River, in the area of the second Bag of Khongor Soum, inscriptions in Mongolian and Phags-pa script and red ochre drawings are found beneath a rock at Bichigt Khoshuu. The Sharyn Gol ochre drawings depict a soaring eagle and four horses. On the banks of the Orkhon River are the ruins of an ancient city, one of the province’s historical sites.
