Gorge, Nature Reserve and Birdlife

From the museum grounds at the entrance to Trebujeni, the view opens out over the rocky valley of the Răut. Trebujeni lies in the microzone through which the Orheiul Vechi Cultural and Natural Reserve stretches along the Răut Gorge; it also includes Butuceni and Morovaia. Here, a particular perspective on the landscape meets a natural and cultural region.

Orheiul Vechi is a pilot area for birdwatching. The reserve is home to around 100 bird species across five natural habitats. The landscape and birdwatching therefore offer two different perspectives on the reserve. The Drumul Dragonului ecotourism route also connects nature themes with the protected area: launched in October 2024, the route includes the Trebujeni Landscape Reserve, a protected area of national importance. Along the route, conditions are in place to protect and restore rare plant and animal species.

Trails with Different Levels of Difficulty

The Butuceni–Trebujeni–Furceni–Piatra trail passes through Trebujeni and is suitable for hiking or adventure cycling. Some sections are difficult and conditions vary by season. If you plan to take this trail, bear these limitations in mind and check conditions locally.

The Trebujeni–Furceni trail follows a limestone path at the foot of the Trebujeni foothills and through the Răut floodplain. There is a rockfall warning for the trail. Medieval Spring in Trebujeni is a rest stop on the Medieval Town Trail.

Medieval Sites and Cave Churches

The Tatar Baths near the entrance to Trebujeni are a stop on the Core of the Reserve hiking route. Dating from the mid-14th century, they were part of the infrastructure of the medieval town. Check local access conditions for the baths. The medieval mosque and caravanserai complex are also stops on this route. The ensemble is near the road between Butuceni and Trebujeni and was built during Mongol rule, between 1350 and 1365. The term “caravanserai” refers to an inn for caravans and explains the name of the complex.

Another trace of the medieval town is the cobblestone road: it is partly covered with earth or lies beneath the modern road leading to Trebujeni. These different states of preservation are part of the historical character of the place and its roads.

The Bosie Cave Church dates from the 16th century. It is visible from the trail and can be reached via a moderately difficult unpaved ascent. The Assumption Monastery includes a stone church carved into Pestera Cave in 1904; monks were already living in the cave in the 16th century. The church can be visited along the path. Together, these places illustrate different historical connections with caves, from monastic use to a later stone church.
