Tohatin combines a landscape of gentle hills and valleys with a local history whose first documentary mention is dated differently in different sources. Two perspectives shape the place: its natural form and the cultural traces of its places and institutions. Tohatin lies on the Chişinău–Vadul lui Vodă transport route; early settlement dates and more recent economic history provide further chronological context.
Hills, Valleys and Vegetation
Tohatin features a series of gentle hills. Together, the hills and valleys form an extensive natural amphitheatre. The landscape description thus connects individual landforms with a larger picture of rises and valleys.
Natural vegetation includes steppe species as well as stands of sessile oaks, ash trees, hornbeams and beeches. The forested area of Tohatin commune covers 199 hectares, equivalent to 13.1 percent of its area.
Historical Mentions and Founding Stories
Tohatin’s first documentary mention is dated to 1517; other historical accounts give 1512. The two dates for the earliest mention therefore coexist.
Later founding stories concern Cheltuitori and Buneți. Cheltuitori was founded in 1800 by three shepherd families from a suburb of Chişinău. Buneți was founded in 1901 by several Ukrainian and Romanian families who had resettled from Hotin to the area around Chişinău. The two stories describe different origins and founding years.
Agriculture is also part of the local history: an agricultural cooperative founded in 1949 was later converted into the “Valea Trandafirilor” state farm and factory. The former “Valea Trandafirilor” state farm and factory specialised in growing and processing aromatic and essential oil plants; it was dissolved in 1997.
Cultural Points of Interest
The Orthodox Christian Church of Sf. Cuvioasa Parascheva is located in the village of Tohatin. Construction began in 2003, and services have been held there since 2008. These dates place the church’s construction history within the more recent history of the area.
The Casa de Cultură cultural centre in Tohatin has been operating since 1964 and has a total capacity of about 300 seats.
The folk ceramicist Prividiuc Ivan is listed on the national tourist route Ruta Ceramicii at the address Școlilor 5 in Tohatin. This adds a connection to folk ceramics to the history of the area’s buildings and institutions.
Festivals and Event Dates
Tohatin celebrates its Hram every year on 27 October in honour of Saint Cuvioasa Parascheva. The date gives the festival a fixed place in the local calendar.
Events marking the opening of the sports season were held in Tohatin on 28 May 2023 and 24 May 2026. Both dates fell in May, but not on the same calendar day. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your chosen year.
