The experiences described here offer a wide range of discoveries in Micronesia: cultural heritage, historic sites, caves, waterfalls and wreck diving. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding first what you’d most like to focus on. The examples on Yap, Kosrae and Pohnpei, and in Chuuk, also differ in whether they involve a hike, a short walk, swimming or diving.

Culture and tradition on Yap

The traditional stone money of the Yapese is called “Raay” or “Feaq” and is still in use. It can be seen particularly in traditional village centers on Yap proper. The Yap Living History Museum presents the Yapese heritage through exhibits and demonstrations of their living culture. This gives you different ways to explore culture and tradition: the stone money in the village centers, and the exhibits and demonstrations at the museum.

The Canoe Festival can also factor into your timing. The Yap Traditional Navigation Society holds it annually over three days in November or December. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance. This lets you include a recurring cultural event in your plans without confusing it with the cultural features described as available year-round.

Nan Madol and waterfalls on Pohnpei

Nan Madol is a striking destination for anyone interested in historic architecture: the site encompasses 92 islands across 222 acres (90 hectares). Basalt blocks form its walls and buildings. The number of islands, the area and the building material give your visit a specific architectural focus.

On Pohnpei, you can also choose from different waterfall experiences. Pahn Takai Cave and Falls is reached after a 30-minute hike through the rainforest; there you’ll find a large overhanging cave and a waterfall. At Kepirohi Waterfall, a large, open pool at the base is a place where visitors and locals swim. At Liduduhniap Waterfall, a short walk leads to a large pool, thatched huts and a picnic area. This is located above the falls and offers views of the waterfall, tropical jungle and a mountain valley. Lehn-Paipohn Waterfall is a good choice for observing plants and birds. The routes can be compared directly: a 30-minute rainforest hike at Pahn Takai and a short walk at Liduduhniap.

Caves and wreck diving in Chuuk

Chuuk offers two different types of activities. At Nefo Cave & Old Japanese Gun, the experience includes a series of caves that can be explored on foot and the well-preserved remains of a large artillery gun. The Japanese used the gun during World War II. In Chuuk Lagoon, wreck diving is offered at the sunken ships of the Japanese Fourth Imperial Fleet. You can choose between exploring caves with a historical connection and a diving-focused experience.

Planning visits and nature experiences on Kosrae

Wiya Bird Cave is right beside a main road. Guano has accumulated at the base of the cave over the decades, and locals use it as a nutrient-rich supplement in home gardens in villages throughout Kosrae. Here, a cave can be linked to a specific local use: guano is not only associated with the site but is also used in gardens across the island.

Planning visits to many historic and cultural sites in the state of Kosrae is especially important, as many are on private land. For most sites, you need to contact the landowners in advance. You can do so directly, through a named tour guide, or by contacting the Kosrae HPO with questions at least two weeks before arrival. Make sure to arrange this contact in good time and confirm the arrangements before your visit.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation search

If you’re looking for a hotel, you can start by deciding which destination and experiences you’d like to focus on. Yap offers cultural experiences, Pohnpei combines Nan Madol with waterfalls and nature watching, Chuuk is known for caves and wreck diving, and Kosrae combines caves with specific guidance on planning a visit to historic sites.
