Fresnillo was officially declared a historic city in 2023. Its history can be explored at various sites: the Ágora is dedicated to notable figures from Fresnillo, while several museums showcase archaeological finds and mining history. Parque Ecológico Los Jales also offers kayaking and pedal boating, climbing and mountain biking. This lets you choose which cultural and activity highlights to focus on according to your interests.
City history and collections
Fresnillo is considered a landmark location along the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. This designation adds a connection to the historic route to the city’s many historical sites.
The Museo Comunitario de Sitio de Fresnillo displays donated finds: projectile points, stone household utensils, local handicrafts, masks, wood carvings, documents and tools formerly used in mining. The collection ranges from everyday objects and crafts to evidence of the mining industry. Visitors interested in different aspects of the past will find a focus here that differs from the exhibits dedicated to specific individuals.
The Ágora José González Echeverría was built in 1852 by order of President Antonio López de Santa Anna. It has nine exhibition rooms dedicated to various figures from Fresnillo. These include Manuel M. Ponce, Francisco Goitia, Tomás Méndez, Daniel Peralta and Mateo Gallegos. The Museo de Minería Napoleón Gómez Sada complements this historical perspective with a model of Hacienda Nueva Fresnillo, considered the largest mineral-processing hacienda in the world.
Activities at Parque Ecológico Los Jales
Parque Ecológico Los Jales was created from a former mining tailings reservoir and converted into an ecological park. The park offers kayaking and pedal boating through canals to the lake. Other activities include a zip line, a ten-meter-high climbing wall and a mountain bike trail with bicycle rentals. Its focus on activities clearly sets it apart from the cultural and historical exhibition sites.
Further context about the Fresnillo destination
The wider Fresnillo destination also includes the history of Santuario de Plateros in Plateros, Fresnillo. The sanctuary was declared a World Heritage Site in 2010 and is one of the sites in Zacatecas State included on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro cultural route. Since 1892, its facade has featured a sundial in the shape of a dove with outstretched wings.
Devotion to the Santuario made Plateros the most important pilgrimage center in northern Mexico. The Sala Museo Senderos de Milagros is dedicated to the faithful of the Santuario and devotees of Santo Niño de Atocha. This broader context complements Fresnillo’s urban and mining history with its religious history. The wider Fresnillo destination also includes the Unidad de Manejo para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre, which temporarily takes in animals that have been confiscated or voluntarily surrendered.
