In Celestún, you can choose how much to focus on local history and nature: the Templo de la Purísima Concepción church is in town, while the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve is nearby. Its wetlands, birdlife and water-based activities give trip planning a clear focus on nature.

Ría Celestún: Wetland and Birdlife

The biosphere reserve lies between the towns of Celestún and Maxcanú in the western part of the peninsula, above the mouth of Yucatán’s largest groundwater basin. It is part of an extensive wetland corridor. Freshwater surfaces there from underground aquifers, making the area a natural wetland. Mangroves, dunes and lowland rainforests are an important natural heritage, especially for birds, and serve as a stopover for many migratory species.

Ría Celestún is home to the largest population of pink flamingos in the Caribbean. It is also the most important feeding ground for the American flamingo and a habitat for 95 resident and 75 migratory bird species. Canadian migratory ducks arrive at the Ría from December to March. If you want to see this species, you can plan your trip around this specific period.

Tours with Different Focuses

Different perspectives take center stage on the water. The nature experience “No. 051 Celestún: túnel de manglares en canoa” takes you by canoe through the mangrove tunnels of the Celestún Reserve, offering a chance to experience the protected area’s flora and fauna. On boat tours led by local residents, you can observe the Ría’s natural ecosystem. The “Celestún en rosa” tour includes a visit to the Parador Turístico de Guardianes de los Manglares de Dzinitún. Check the availability of each tour and current access to the parador in advance.

The Costa Fish Group offers a different kind of boat trip at the port of Celestún, where visitors can catch the day’s catch. This makes it different from trips that focus on observing the ecosystem.

Natural and Cultural Heritage in the Municipality

The Templo de la Purísima Concepción church is in Celestún, the municipality’s main town. East of the town lies the former Hacienda Real de Salinas, once an important salt-production center. They are two distinct historical points of reference: a church in town and a former salt-production site to the east.

The municipality is also home to the Cambay spring, a freshwater spring, and the petrified forest of Tampetén. Visitors can swim and dive at the Baldiosera spring. These natural features complement the Ría’s wetlands with additional landscape themes, without being mistaken for part of the town center.

El Palmar lies 31 kilometers north of Celestún along an unpaved coastal road and is an ecotourism destination. Migratory waterbirds, including the Canada goose, live there; a large lighthouse is one of its attractions. Check road conditions before setting out.

Planning Your Trip

Celestún lies west of Mérida; the journey takes about an hour and may vary depending on the route and conditions. This lets you connect your search with the themes you actually want to include in your trip planning.
